A couple of the reasons why many enthusiasts autocross their Corvettes is that these “lower speed” events tend to have a lower cost to participate while the odds of actually damaging your car are generally low as well.
But accidents still can happen as this video from the Goodguy’s event this weekend in Pleasanton, California illustrates.
An Orange C6 Z06 was running the autocross course when the driver drove straight into one of the concrete “Jersey” barricades that lined the perimeter of the course.
A camera angle shows the car accelerating on a straight portion of the track and then slammed directly in the barricade. The force of the impact sent the barricade sliding across the lot as both the car and it came to rest directly in front of where spectators were watching the event.
According to an eyewitness on the Corvette Forum, it’s being blamed on brake failure:
I went to the Goodguy’s in Pleasanton, Ca and Saturday a C6 Z06 failed to stop at the end of the Auto Cross coarse and smashed through the concrete barrier, through a fence and came to rest against a concrete planter box. Amazing no spectators were hit. Several videos already online, below is a link to a couple. Totaled the car and the driver was taken by ambulance to the hospital. I heard he was banged up but will be okay. The story is that the brakes failed however the video shows that the brake lights never came on.
@datsunjesse Crash at good guys car show track event. Everyone was okay #Goodguys #goodguyscarshow #carmeet #z06 ♬ original sound – jesse
An arial video of the crash was also posted on Facebook.
We are glad to hear that none of the spectators were injured as that Z06 was really moving before it ran out of track, and hopefully the driver recovers as well.

Driver failed, not the brakes…
I was the driver, this is the speed stop portion at end of course after an acceleration portion. ABS went into ICE mode and all i got was a very hard pedal and as you can hear and see car dip in video, a couple short brake applications by ABS. I was not hurt and not taken to hospital as stated in article. Thankfully everyone was able to walk away.
1. How soon after a car accident should I see a doctor? Ideally, visit a doctor within 24 hrs.
2. What kinds of injuries may not show up immediately after a crash? Whiplash, internal bleeding, concussions, and soft tissue injuries may take time to manifest.
3. Should I call my insurance company before seeking medical care? No. Prioritize medical evaluation first- your health and documentation are essential for claims.
4. What documentation should I gather at the scene after the accident? Take photos, gather witness info, and record all vehicle and driver details.
5. Can delaying treatment affect my recovery and claim? Yes. Waiting too long may worsen injuries and weaken your insurance or legal case. Thanks, Ray
Glad to hear you were okay Steve!
That looks like a poorly laid out course. Our Corvette Club has rules for course layout that minimize the chance of such an occurrence. I’m not familiar with “Ice Mode’ in the ABS system, but that looks like something went seriously wrong. Glad nobody was injured.
Coulda tried to turn?
Ice mode refers to a sudden loss in braking power. The brake pedal stays firm but the braking is cut to ~10-20%. The ABS system senses there is not enough grip to apply full braking (On ice) so cuts the power. The assumption is that applying the brake will only compound the problem by locking the wheels, thus preventing the tires from regaining traction. Therefore, the system reduces brake pressure to try and regain traction before reapplying force again.
*Mr. Steve Keefer, thank you for your update and we at the Corvette Blogger are all very glad you are safe and doing well. Thanks, Ray
Thank you Ray, I’ve probably got 15 years of experience running old school cars on this particular course in Pleasanton, but never anything with ABS. I’ve tracked this car at Thunderhill a few times, never had any problems and honestly was unaware of the potential “Ice mode” issue with these cars or I never would’ve taken it out on such a tight course with a concrete barrier at end. Once I researched more, Ice mode seems to be a well-documented issue, especially in autocross. Many asked why i didn’t turn, I was going far too fast for a 90 degree turn and a side impact into barrier would’ve for sure been worse and possibly a rollover. I’m not responding to any of the negative comments on social media but I would like to clarify the situation, specifically with other Corvette owners to raise awareness of this situation. BTW the car will be fixed!
Bullshit. Brake lights never lit up.
