That Chevrolet dealers meeting in Las Vegas has been happening through this week and from it we’ve received some additional information about the Grand Sports and the new LS6 V8 engine that will be offered in 2027.
The big news is that multiple sources have confirmed that the new 6.7L LS6 V8 engine will come in at 535 horsepower. That’s a healthy bump in power from the current LT2 V8 found in the Stingrays and E-Rays, which is rated at 490 to 495 hp depending on whether or not the performance exhaust option is optioned with the car.
The other piece of news we’ve gleaned is that Chevrolet will be standardizing the front electric motor, which means the Grand Sport X will be getting the same 186-hp front electric motor currently offered in the Corvette ZR1X. Chevrolet was forced to beef up some of the internals of that front electric motor to handle the ZR1X’s additional power and now that motor is flowing down to the GSX.
Our friend Mike from the Brink of Speed Youtube channel covers this info and he addresses the elephant in the room: Why GM would allow the horsepower figure of the Grand Sport X to surpass that of the 670-hp Z06. After all, the Grand Sport has traditionally slotted in between the Stingray and Z06 in both price and performance. But I have to agree with Mike’s assessment:
How does a Grand Sport have more horsepower than a Z06? And why would GM do that? Doesn’t it hurt the Z06? Well, my answer to that is no, not at all. And I believe GM is going to say the same because believe it or not, GM understands their buyers better than anyone else. The people buying a Z06 are not buying it just for horsepower. They’re buying it for the flat-plane crank LT6 8600 RPM redline, of course, the sound and the track experience. The Z06 is about emotion and precision, and it’s a track weapon.
Now, the Grand Sport X, this is a completely different buyer. This is the guy who wants insane acceleration, all-wheel drive traction, and all-weather capability, and still crazy performance. This car is going to be an absolute street monster. So, yes, it has more horsepower than a Z06, but it does not replace what the Z06 is. And honestly, GM doesn’t care if a few Z06 buyers switch over to the Grand Sport X anyway, because at the end of the day, that’s still a Corvette sale.
Former Corvette Product Manager Harlan Charles recently dropped the best line about the Z06 ownership experience: Every time you drive it, it’s like an event! So yeah, the Z06 will continue to do just fine despite the model lineup changes coming for 2027.

The 2027 Corvette Grand Sport X horsepower has now been CONFIRMED, and the numbers are even crazier than most people expected.

I for one will give real thought in buying corvette’s in the future if they produce a GSX with more horsepower than a Z06! It’s bad enough they’ve depreciated their value by flooding the market each year (c8) with the z06 now they want to make the grand sport with more horsepower than the C8 Z06. Historically the gs was just a option upgrade as the z51 is but now if they produce it with higher horsepower than the z06 all of us that paid six figures for the Z will take more of a depreciation.
Why would anyone stay with a manufacturer that doesn’t care about loyal enthusiasts of there brand/model when they take greed over longtime customers!
I’ve been a corvette owner for almost 50 years however I don’t want to lose many thousands of dollars each time I purchase their high end vehicles! There’s way too many other options out there!
Chevy needs to slow down a little…. They are making too many over lapping models….
Well Gary, The Grand Sport was always more than a option package. The Z51 option package was nothing compared to the Grand Sport.
Will the regular Stingray and the Z51 have the quad center exhaust? I know that Chevy is putting the LS6 engine in them, but will they have the same quad center exhaust?
They always can make a Z06 X.
A grand sport x y z is still not a Z06.!!
Gary, the GS will still be a 535hp car. It’s nowhere near as powerful as a Z06. Don’t get your panties knotted.
The E-Ray has always been more powerful than the C6Z, at least in general use and in small bursts. Tuner-shop dyno charts show that. In-car dyno shows that. In fact, I’d wager the ER has been underrated from the factory, just to keep the Z06 owners happy. Many have seen 180+hp from the front motor, which means that the ER is already equaling the Z06 peak power…or more.
The argument you’re making is as inane as a ZR1 owner complaining that a ZR1X exists.
Seriously! The more HP and more models the merrier! If you’re going to cry to GM about building a better faster car that out performs the one you already purchased, then we all better start crying now. Newer is always better. Maybe you shouldn’t be buying new cars if you’re worried about being out done by the next model to come… Frankly, I give GM a BIG hearty round of applause for the boldness and variety approach! Bravo!
Well the 535 HP 6.7 is the same 80 HP per liter of the 6.2. Great.
As for the GSx VS Z06, the Z06 is lighter and certainly more track oriented.
Current MSRP, the eray is only $4000 less than a Z06, so it stands to reason a GSx will be about the same price as a Z06.
The bean counters and production managers and marketing folks at Chevrolet are going to be burning some midnight oil to make sense of pricing structure.
The ‘elepant’ in the room, keep the ‘base’ ( I hate that term for any Corvette) price the same or lower with the new 6.7 it will continue to cement C8 as the greatest bargin in the universe!
Just dayin’.
Why not just get a standard Corvette with the Z51 option and enjoy, all the other models are just overkill.
The car is mid engined with no manual transmission, so why not go ahead and make all the Corvette models AWD X models? It seems like a logical next step. 6.7 with AWD, 5.5 with AWD, and 5.5TT with AWD. It’s a little unfair there is a 5.5 twin turbo model but no supercharged 6.7. It’s also dumb to not make the ZR1X the only ZR1. I know the Z06 is a purist car, but AWD for all Corvettes just goes along with mid-engined and dual clutch transmission. You would still hear the engine, it would just be a weight issue. And lastly, doesn’t anyone other than me believe that 535 hp just isn’t enough from a 6.7 V8?! They get 550 hp from 6.2 crate engines! I was honestly expecting 575 hp 550 lb-ft of torque…
