At some point in the life of every great car, a question hangs in the air like dust in a forgotten barn: When is a classic too far gone to save? That’s the debate swirling around a battered, skeletal 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Split Window Coupe now drawing surprising attention — and surprising money — on Bring a Trailer.
Even in pieces, even missing half its body, even without a frame, engine, or drivetrain, this Corvette still has the one thing that makes grown collectors weak in the knees: it’s a real 1963 Split Window Sting Ray.
And for some bidders, that’s enough.
This particular car left St. Louis wearing Riverside Red over black vinyl, one of 4,612 painted that shade. Today, almost none of that remains. The front clip is gone. Both rear quarters are gone. The frame was discarded entirely — the seller says it was too damaged to save. The original 327, the four speed, the steering gear, the suspension… all long gone.
What’s left is a roof, a firewall, a floor, a pair of doors that still open and close, and the holy grail: the split rear glass and its trim.
It is, in the most literal sense, a shell.
And yet, bidding has already surged from $1 to more than $13,000, with four days still remaining.
Then came the twist no one expected.
Buried in the comments, a user named Eaberryjr stepped forward with a revelation:
“My dad owned this vette… He wrecked it in 1984. Flipped the car several times racing a Barracuda on Riverside Drive in Dublin, Ohio.”
Suddenly, the missing frame, the missing panels, the decades of outdoor exposure — it all made sense. This wasn’t a car that slowly decayed. It was a car that lived hard, crashed hard, and never recovered.
For the family, the listing answered a decades old question: Whatever happened to Dad’s Corvette?
Now they know.
Predictably, the comments section has become a battleground.
Some shook their heads:
“Wow, if just this piece in this condition brings this much money, seems like it is smarter to just buy one that is completely restored…”
Others were more blunt:
“I’ve seen more complete cars stripped down in the South Bronx. Forget bringing a trailer — all you’ll need is a wheelbarrow.”
But then came the counterargument — and it’s a compelling one.
The seller, responding directly, laid out the case:
“If someone wants a restored original ’63, yes, they’re better off buying one. But this is the perfect starting point for a high dollar restomod.”
He’s not wrong. Companies like Dynamic Corvettes and Lee Bumb (formerly Sermersheim’s) can supply every missing panel, even carbon fiber versions of the split window roof. Custom frames are readily available. And for someone dreaming of a modern powered, pro touring ’63, this shell might actually be the ideal starting point.
Why cut up a $70,000 complete car when you can start with exactly what you need?
There’s something almost poetic about this car. It’s a survivor, but only barely. It’s a relic, but not a pristine one. It’s a project, but not for the faint of heart.
And yet, it’s also a blank page — the kind of car that invites imagination, not judgment.
Some bidders see a lost cause. Others see a once in a lifetime opportunity. And at least one family sees a piece of their history resurfacing after 40 years.
“I think for the next owner,” says the seller, “this will not be about restoring a car, it will be about bringing a dream to life.”
With the auction in its closing days, the only certainty is that this Corvette will find a new home. What happens next — restoration, restomod, or resurrection — is up to the dreamer who wins the auction.
But one thing is clear: even in ruins, a ’63 Split Window still has the power to stir the soul.

just don’t waste time trying to look out the rear joyhouse windowettes;
I think it will need more than an oil change and tuneup….

If I could buy this cheaply, say $2,000. Being a Corvette nut, it would be a great garden art piece. I would seal up the cabin, clean it up, so people could sit in it and drink a beer near my backyard bar.
As ridiculous as a MK IV Supra burnt to the ground, asking for 20k. “Don’t lowball me, I know what I have”.
When the last boomer dies off, the 63 value will get flushed down the toilet. Good riddance.
I wish the 63 remains well and hope it rises again in any rolling form. Good luck to the buyer.
This car is from my birth year. I hope someone restores this potentially beautiful piece of Corvette and automotive history.
