[VIDEO] U-Drags: C8 Corvette E-Ray Faces Off with the Porsche 911 GTS Hybrid

Our favorite online drag racing series and our favorite car have teamed up once again! That’s right, there’s a Corvette on the newest chapter of Edmunds’ famed U-Drags, and unlike last month’s episode, the C8 in question actually has a dance partner this time around!

Unless a peerless ZR1 shows up, U-Drags takes two vehicles from a competitive set and puts them through a gauntlet of performance tests in a single take. The festivities begin with a standing quarter mile before entering a brake zone with a tire-testing 180-degree turn and finishing with a rolling drag race back to the start/finish line.

The most recent running of the event features a pair of hybridized icons. The home team is represented by a Corvette E-Ray decked out in Hoth assault gear. Its perpetual rival, the Porsche 911, also stepped into the starting blocks with its new electrified powertrain option. The German challenger’s full calling card is [deep breath] Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS T-Hybrid.

The T-Hybrid system integrates an electrically driven turbocharger and an e-motor good for 53 HP and 110 lb-ft of torque with a traditional Porsche 3.6L flat-six. All in, the new GTS overpowers its famed GT3 counterpart with 532 horsepower and 449 lb-ft. The world’s first AWD Corvette uses the 6.2L LT2 V8 from the Stingray and augments it with a self-contained 160-horse front electric axle for a Porsche-embarrassing total system HP/torque mix of 655/595. The 911 counters with a curb weight advantage close to 300 lbs., easier on the scales than the ‘Vette (3,675 to 3,927).

In Car and Driver’s independent testing, today’s fighters are as evenly matched as you’re likely to see with identical 0-60 and 1,320-foot sprints. The E-Ray barely separates itself by getting to 100 MPH one-tenth of a second quicker and pulling an extra .01 of a g on the skidpad, while the 911 stops 12 feet sooner from 70 MPH. Which one will put it all together and win what should be one of the closest U-Drags battles ever waged? Find out below!

  1. I forgot to add a pretty important detail: buyers can get the E-Ray AND a nicely optioned Stingray for the price of the hybrid 911.

  2. I know the guys at Edmunds and I am pretty sure the Porsche won. That said, can’t get over the frontal picture of the two and not thinking that 911 was made in the 70s?
