Corvette Nation is starving for some third-party – and firsthand! – 2025 ZR1 content; content that just hasn’t reached the menu quite yet. Luckily, our guys over at Edmunds are serving some appetizers to try to tide us over while we wait, and you’d be hard-pressed to find a better appetizer than “Eddy’s” famous U-Drags. It’s like the Triple-Dipper of automotive enjoyment, combining the straight-line goodness of a drag and a roll race with an all-out braking zone and a high-g road-holding 180 turn all on one delicious plate!
C8 Corvettes are no stranger to Edmunds’ signature assessment, with all three versions having competed in multiple down-and-backs against everything from muscle-bound domestic coupes to bona fide supercars and even each other. ‘Vettes always bring their A-game to U-Drags; they never fail to look good, sound great, and turn in excellent ETs! Because of these aptitudes and their massive click-bringing fanbase, The Crossed-Flags have become one of the most common contestants at U-Drags, and this time, as possibly its last showing as the top dog in the lineup, they are being represented by the king of naturally-aspirated V8 production cars: the 2023+ Z06!
Like all C8Zs, the Rapid Blue over Sky Cool Gray base aero Coupe (configured without Z07/ceramic brakes to a sum of $147,800) in the Star-Spangled Corner today revs to the stratosphere at 8,600 rpm and makes 670 HP to go with 460 lb-ft of torque. It sends all of that grunt exclusively to the rear corners and shifts its eight forward gears with a dual-clutch automatic transmission. It tips the scales at 3,715 lbs., giving it a lofty weight-to-power ratio of 5.54 pounds per pony.
Playing antagonist today is the drop-top Cielo version of Maserati’s stunning MC20 supercar. It features a mid-mounted 3.0L twin-turbo DOHC V6 that spins out 621 horses and 538 torques. The Cielo also features an 8-speed DCT and RWD, but it nearly misses weight for this fight with 4,013 lbs. sitting on its Bridgestones, leaving its livestock saddled with 6.46 lbs. each. This thick Italian beauty also hits the wallet more than twice as hard as Bowling Green’s finest, with a staggering MSRP of $371,450.
We’ll refrain from spoiling anything, but if you’ve been following these tests at all, you won’t be disappointed in the formula. There’s facts and threatening engine revs (which is always one of the highlights when the Z06 is involved) followed by the first race, then the drivers switch cars and go again to remove as many variables as possible and crown a champ before going over the numbers and impressions. But before, or maybe after, you turn the volume all the way to the right and mash that play button, help us out with a conversation this brought up in the e-offices of CorvetteBlogger: what could possibly stand up to the monster ZR1 in this format? After mulling it over, the only thing that would make sense is another rendition of ‘Vette vs. Jet. Here’s hoping Edmunds can find a branch of the military willing to play ball, in the meantime, enjoy this flat-plane calm before the storm!
