Chevrolet created the ultimate driver’s car with the introduction of the LT1 V8 engine in 1970 and the three-year run (1970-192) produced some of the most collectible small-block Corvettes ever made. Drivers loved them due to their peak small-block performance before emissions strangled everything and its power to weight ratio was roughly 8.5 lbs per horsepower – that’s supercar performance for 1970 and still very respectable today.
Chevy produced approximately 4,976 LT1s over the three year span. A total of 1,287 were produced for the 1970 model year. In 1971 LT1 production was 1,949 and in 1972 it fell to 1,741. Now, 4,976 cars is still quite a large universe of cars, so you would expect to see these collectible Corvettes in many different exterior colors. However, during the first half of the 1970s, Chevrolet didn’t offer Black as a regular production option for Corvettes, so your chances of seeing a Black LT1 in the wild are nearly zero.
But that’s not to say they don’t exist. Here is a real Black 1971 LT1 Coupe that was displayed at the Muscle Cars and Corvette Nationals show just a few weeks ago, still wearing its barn-find condition like a badge of honor and showing off its documentation that proves it’s a black factory LT1. As of today, it’s said to be the only documented Black 1971 LT1 that is known to exist.

The owners of the car said they fielded offers to buy it from the moment it rolled off the trailer, and they did eventually make a deal to sell the car on Sunday afternoon. Perhaps we will be seeing it again sometime in the future, but I bet it won’t look as cool or rare as it does now in its present barn-find condition.

Wow this car is truly a unique 1 of 1 unicorn Corvette. It would be so awesome if it was restored!
Nice story, but LT-1 production numbers are way off. There were only 1287 LT-1 Corvettes made in 1970.
My Dad owned a black/black 1971 4 spd. Corvette back in the day. Guys in the NCRS club told me that was impossible as they didn’t come in black. That always left me feeling confused as I used to ride in It when I was a kid and it wasn’t repainted. Wonder if this one was his? I have pics & video of it if the new owners would like to see them. My buddy had the LT1 engined 1971 Camaro Z28. That he bought new. One of the fastest cars I’d been in up to that point. (1971)
Only thing better? The higher compression 1970 LT1!
Are the tires/rims and side exhaust all original also?
