By 1993, Chevrolet was winding down production of the C4 ZR-1. With the base car capable of making 300 horsepower, just 105 less than the much more expensive ZR-1 (a $31,283 option in 1994), and the bodies looking very similar to the average person, Chevy decided to pull the plug and use up its remaining stock of LT5 engines with 448 ZR-1s offered in each of the final three years (1993-95).

This two-owner example from 1994, said to have only 24,000 miles on the odometer, is being offered on Bring a Trailer, where the highest bid so far has climbed to $11,250 with five days left in the auction.

Of course, people buy ZR-1s for the power of the LT5 V8 engine that represented an unusual path for Chevy – with its collaborative effort with Lotus designing the engine and Mercury Marine in Oklahoma assembling them and shipping them to Bowling Green for insertion in the widebody cars.

Flaws with this example include a chatter in the six-speed manual gearbox, though one reader suggests using Castrol Edge 10w60 oil to quieten it down. The seller, in a driving video, says it’s not “overpowering or super loud” but notes that replacing the clutch, master, and slave cylinder and flushing the brake and transmission fluids did not make the sound disappear. He still can’t offer a diagnosis for the problem, but says that the vehicle “shifts as it should.”

Other recent maintenance on the car includes replacing the fuel regulator, front brake pads, and brake hoses and installing new tires that now have less than 1,000 miles.

The Carfax isn’t clean, with a minor accident reported 30 years ago. The seller doesn’t have any additional records but believes it may have been something “very cosmetic” since the color is “spot on” now. Despite a note that also explains the car was registered in a county declared a flood disaster area by FEMA, the seller says he doesn’t see signs of previous water damage and the prior owner says it was not flooded.

The car, which is in Douglassville, Pennsylvania, includes a six-speed manual transmission, black leather upholstery, 17-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, Selective Ride & Handling Package, removable body-color roof panel, power adjustable sport seats, automatic climate control, and Delco Bose Gold Series Sound System.

  1. I have owned some variation of a Corvette all my adult life and the C-4 has always been my least favorite model. That being said, I have always been somewhat partial to the Z-R1 and this one is no exception. Black has always been my default color ( my current C-5 FRC is black) so this one tickles my fancy. Even with the admitted shortcomings this could be a nice score if the bidding doesn’t get too out of hand.

  2. This car also has the very typical C4 ZR-1 delaminating windshield. Despite the things wrong with it, I would still have this bad in black ZR-1.
