We’ve covered the ‘Vette Kart subset of Corvette culture a number of times over the years, but
the gist of it is this: an individual purchases an older Corvette – usually a C4-C6 on the cheap,
ideally wrecked – to strip down to its core components as a form of lightening it for off-road/on-
track use. They’re crude but cool and, best of all, the weight savings can make even the most
anemic and undermaintained L83 V8 feel competitive with more modern and potent
powerplants.
So, a rough mid-80s C4 is the go-to donor for this type of conversion, but this weekend, Mecum Las Vegas has one that isn’t that at all; in fact, it might be the first “nice” Vette Kart in the limited history of the niche.
It’s registered as a 1963 Corvette because that’s what its custom “Illusion Orange” tube
exoskeleton and custom lighting treatment are designed to mimic, but underneath is something
far more sinister than a ’63 Split Window. This Kart started out life as a 2009 Corvette Z06 and
retains the anti-L83: its signature free-breathing 505-horse LS7.
The Z had around 33k miles before going under the knife, and its 7.0L V8 and transmission have been “refreshed,” with the latter also receiving a new short-throw shifter. The chassis is listed as custom, but per the listing, it retains the factory Z06 torque tube, rear diff, disc brakes with ABS, suspension, cooling, and fuel systems. The build features black Cup-Style wheels familiar to many 2012-13 Z06 and 2017-19 Grand Sport owners, shod in Nitto rubber.
Inside (if you want to call it that), there’s a pair of upscale-looking, but wisely upholstered in
element-friendly vinyl, tan racing bucket seats, along with “Marine-grade” carpet and headliner,
and a MOMO steering wheel.
This slick ’09 – ’63 Frankenstein’s monster by Stripped Down Street Rods of Vail, Arizona, is set to cross the stage of the Las Vegas Convention Center on Saturday, November 15th, and it’s difficult to wager a guess about how much it could hammer for. All we know is that this orange shark cage is one more noteworthy builds we’ve seen in some time, and could simultaneously set the market for and inspire a legion of similar high-end ‘Vette Kart builds, so we’ll be watching its result intently.

Wow, nice work there! I don’t understand having carpets, but otherwise very interestingly cool presentation! 👍
