Last Thursday, news broke that GM was issuing a voluntary recall on all C8 Corvette Z06s and ZR1s due to the risk of fire from excess fuel spillage. In addition to the recall, a Stop Sale notice was also placed so that any new or pre-owned Z06s offered for sale by dealers will also need to have the new fix in place before they can be returned to the sales floor.
We had initially estimated a total of 25,286 Z06 were affected by this issue, which was a combination of sold vehicles subject to the recall and those new or pre-owned Z06s that were given the Stop Sale notice at Chevrolet dealers. We now have the total number subject to the recall and it’s 23,656 units. That leaves an estimated 1,630 that were subject to the stop sale.
GM will begin notifying owners of the C8 Corvette Z06 about the risk of fire and the recall with a letter that will go out on October 6th. A second letter will be sent to owners once the fix for the issue is available.
After an undisclosed number of Z06s have caught on fire at gas stations going back to 2023, an investigation found that “Excess fuel that spills into the vehicle’s fuel-filler pocket has the potential to contact an ignition source, leading to an increased risk of fire.”
The fix for this issue will be a shield to divert spilled fuel and it will be offered to owners free of charge.
As part of the Stop Sale notice, Chevrolet has also pulled the affected units from the Chevrolet Live Inventory tracker. It was just a month ago that Z06 models made up about 45% of the total nation wide inventory with approximately 1,592 examples available out of the 3,549 Corvettes shown. One month later, there are zero Z06s listed due to the Stop Sale, and the total now stands at 1,438 with 800 E-Rays and 638 Stingrays shown on the tracker.
The GM recall number is N252514930.
GM says to never overfill the gas tank or attempt to fill after the gas pump’s automatic shutoff clicks the first time, and avoid filling at a fuel pump if the pump or pump nozzle appears to be damaged or malfunctioning.

Geez Louise!!! 🛑
The fix is to divert fuel on to the side of the fender. Quality is job one.
Just don’t overfill or top off. Simple.
