On Thursday, General Motors announced that it was issuing a voluntary recall on all 2023-2026 Corvette Z06s and 2025-2026 Corvette ZR1s over an excess fuel spillage issue that can happen during refueling. Additionally, any 2025 and 2026 Corvette Z06s and ZR1s that are currently for sale at dealers were also issued a stop sale until the issue is resolved.
We received an official statement from a Chevrolet representative tonight and here what they are saying:
General Motors is voluntarily recalling model year 2023-2026 Chevrolet Corvette Z06s and 2025-2026 Corvette ZR1s in North America to resolve an excess fuel spillage issue during refueling. This is a rare occurrence, and malfunctioning filling station pumps appear to be a contributing factor. The safety of our customers is the highest priority for the entire GM team, and we’re working to remedy this matter as quickly as possible.
As for some background info, there is a document from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (posted below) that goes into more depth with the issue. Excess fuel that spills into the vehicle’s fuel-filler pocket has the potential to contact an ignition source, leading to an increase risk of fire.
That NHTSA document says that dealers will install some sort of insert or shield to divert spilled fuel.
We spoke to a dealer about it tonight as one of his customer’s cars burned at a gas station. What he said is that the fans on the left side of the car will run even when the car is turned off, and if any gasoline that spills into the fuel-filler pocket and hits an ignition source like hot brake rotors, it can ignite the gasoline leading to a car fire. Only the Z06 and ZR1 are currently impacted. We assume the ZR1X will receive these fixes prior to production starting. .
We also saw that GM thinks that malfunctioning or damaged pumps could also be to blame for excess fuel spillage. The NHTSA says never to overfill the tank or attempt to add more fuel after the pump’s automatic shutoff clicks the first time.
We looked at the production stats to see how many cars may be impacted from the recall. For the ZR1, it’s only 108 for 2025 and no 2026s have been released from the plant yet. But we are looking at over 25,000 Z06s subject to the voluntary recall. The 2025 and 2026 numbers are unofficial, but are probably close to these numbers:
2023 – 5,477
2024 – 10,575
2025 – 8,835 (unofficial)
2026 – 399 (unofficial)
Total: 25,286
Corvette owners that are subject to the recall will be notified when they have the proper fix for this issue in place, so I wouldn’t be calling up my dealer for an appointment just yet. You can also check the GM Recalls website for USA owners or at GM Canada for those in the Great White North.

E-Ray has left side cooling fan and wide body from Z06. Not sure why this would not apply to E-Ray as well. My cooling fan frequently runs after I shut the engine off in warm weather.
Topping off never a thing to do on any vehicle as the excess fuel can enter the vapor hose that goes to the charcoal filter that neutralizes fuel fumes, thereby contaminating it.
Surprised you refer to ‘left side’ as opposed to ‘driver side’ because within the auto industry that’s what is the norm.
‘Left side’ some one then asks ‘sitting in the car or looking at the car?’
At GM, quality is not job one. Earnings per share is job one.
What time was this recall issued, the actual time, please.
Thank you
Mark
Anyone who fuels their Corvette and walks away from the pump is just foolish. Even here in NJ where there is an attendant who fuels the car, I stay watching the process with the instruction please do not spill any gas on the car. Some hand me the gas nozzle, some are very careful. But this weekend even at Carlisle where you must pump your own, it is always best not to leave your car while fueling. Just common sense.
Nonsense RC. Not sure why you’d say that. C8 Corvette quality is very good. Owner ignorance is a good part of this particular problem. Fuel spillage can happen with any car. It’s not dangerous if you stop fueling after the gas pump clicks off the first time. There’s no spillage. A secondary benefit is that the evaporative emission canister doesn’t get damaged. But Chevy will make it closer to idiot proof. Notice that GM didn’t tell owners to stop driving their cars in this VOLUNTARY recall.
Many years ago, lots of people were hanging 10 or 15 lbs of “bling” on their key ring that damaged steering column lock cylinders. The usual hyper-critical, anti-GM armchair curmudgeons with nothing else to do complained loudly out of context and gave the corporation a lot of bad PR. So, GM changed to much more costly start buttons and electronic key fobs to make things more idiot proof.

You are right in both cases. When I hear people complain about stuff like this, I ask, have you ever designed anything complex, built it and sell it. Until you do shut up!! The Corvette is an engineering marvel. The factory is also a different marvel itself.
I have a C8Z06 and couldn’t be happier. Let the fueling process spill over? What??
