One of the inspiring stories for the 2025 IMSA season will be DXDT Racing and their Z06 GT3.R driven by Robert Wickens, who is a paraplegic following a devasting IndyCar crash in 2018 at Pocono. Wickens is joining DXDT for the sprint races this season, and he will be utilizing a Bosch hand-control system that provides the ability to control the acceleration and braking from the steering wheel.
To make sure the system is ready when Wickens joins the IMSA field at the Long Beach Grand Prix, Z06 GT3.R development test driver Tommy Milner spent two days between the Roar and the start of the Rolex 24 to test the Bosch hand-control system with representatives from DXDT, Pratt Miller Motorsports, and Bosch.

In between the Roar and Rolex weekends, DXDT, @PrattMillerMS, @BoschGlobal, and @CorvetteRacing conducted two days of on-track testing on a new hand control system, which will debut with @robertwickens at @GPLongBeach!

Wickens has been working towards this goal of driving in IMSA since 2021, starting first with a Hyundai Elantra N TCR that was equipped with the Bosch hand-control system in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge series. In that first season back, Robert took the checkered flag at both Watkins Glen and Canadian Tire Motorsports Park. In 2023, he and co-driver Harry Gottsacker won seven podiums during their championship season in IMPC TCR, and last year he finished 2nd overall in the same series. Now, he’ll be running in IMSA’s WeatherTech Sports Car Championship with DXDT Racing in the GTD class.
Corvette Racing previously worked with Bosch to develop their Collision Avoidance System that identifies the individual racers and gives the driver information about who and what is coming up behind them. That technology is now commonplace in sports car racing paddocks around the world.
The Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach will be held April 11-12 on the Long Beach Street Circuit.

That is so cool for Robert Wickens!
Very cool!
I see that upshifting is controlled by the right fingers and downshifts are controlled by the left fingers. I also see that Tommy’s right hand comes off the steering wheel from time to time, including during acceleration, whereas his left hand never leaves the steering wheel. That would suggest to me that acceration is controlled by the left thumb and braking by the right thumb — is that correct?
