One of my favorite Corvette memories dates back to the early ’70s when I saw a custom C2 in a magazine.
If memory serves me correctly, it looked a lot like this wild 1966 Sting Ray coupe that’s been owned by the same family for the past 58 years but is now being offered for sale on Bring a Trailer.
The high bid has already soared to $75,000, with two days still left in the auction.
The seller’s father didn’t buy the car new, but he came pretty close, having purchased it with just 9,000 miles from the original owner in 1966. At that time, it was still wearing its factory-applied coating of Ermine White paint.
But it didn’t stay that way for long.
Owning a custom auto body shop back then, the new owner used the talents of an employee named Don Honstein to create a lacquer masterpiece in white, purple and blue sometime in the late ’60s. That same paint job – which features a cobwebbing effect popular in the era – is still on the car, decades after it was a reliable trophy winner on the show circuit. Close-up photos do show a couple of random chips, but overall the paint looks just as nice as it did back in the day. Could you imagine what it would cost to recreate this scheme in today’s world? It would probably just be done with a computer-generated wrap now, but likely wouldn’t look as good as this hand-painted one.
But this Sting Ray is more than just a pretty face. Under the hood is a powerful 427/425 horsepower L72 V8 that’s undergone some recent maintenance, including a new oil pan gasket installed in January. More recently, it received new filters and spark plugs and an oil change getting ready for this auction.
Surprisingly, the mods didn’t extend to the black vinyl interior, which has remained stock original and looks to be in excellent condition, not surprising since the car is showing just 24,000 miles on the odometer and is said to have last been driven in 1975.
Other features include a four-speed manual transmission, knock-off wheels, aftermarket side exhaust, and a notebook full of receipts and other paperwork dating back to the ’60s.

Nice car, thankfully you can have them repainted. This paint job is hideous, ruins the looks of the car.
Hot Wheels logo on the rear fender arch and I’m good to go. Love these custom Vettes.
Did I read that right? Not driven for 49 years? Who does that? All I can say is, BUYER BEWARE…
