[VIDEO] 1965 Big Tank Fuelie Sells for $247,500 at Mecum Glendale

Mecum’s Glendale, Arizona sale wrapped up out west last weekend. Corvette sales remain strong as seen by many of the hefty hammer prices achieved at the State Farm stadium. This rare 1965 tanker fuelie coupe was among the expensive Corvettes finding a new home.

Lot F134 was a Tuxedo Black on Black 1965 coupe offered at No Reserve. It’s one of just 41 cars produced with the RPO N03 36-gallon fuel tank.

It’s also one of just 771 built with RPO L84, the 375hp fuel injected engine. Add that up, and you’ve got the only known Tuxedo Black Big Tank Fuelie known to exist. Other options include a M20 4-speed manual transmission, disc brakes, knock off wheels, and gold line tires.

The frame off restored car has resided in several notable collections and owns many awards including NCRS Top Flight and Duntov Mark of Excellence. Additionally, it’s been in the Bloomington Gold Special Collection and the MCACN Corvette Legends Invitational.

1965 Big Tank Fuelie Sells for $225k at Mecum Glendale

In the video below we see this beauty roll across the famous Mecum red carpet. The black paint looks a mile deep under the bright lights. Bidding starts fast and quickly hits $150,000. From there it continues steadily upward with a short pause at $175,000. As the car approaches the $200k mark, the Mecum announcers revel in the outstanding condition of the car. The video wraps up with auctioneer Jimmy Landis working the crowd hard for additional bids. It’s a great look at the lengths the Mecum team will go to just to get a car sold.

Finally, the hammer falls at $225,000 and this tanker is off to a new garage. With the 10% buyers commission that’s a total sale of $247,500.

Previously this car sold for $330,000 at Mecum Kissimmee in 2019 and $225,500 at Kissimmee in 2013.

What do you think of that hammer price? Too much? Maybe a little low like the Sunfire Yellow 1967 L88? Let us know your thoughts in the Comments section below.

  1. I think that this car and the Sunfire Yellow 67 L88 both sold for somewhat less than what they are worth on the market.

  2. I remember passing on a 1963 Fuelie Z06 big tank in my search for a 62 Fuelie….I did not know what a Z06 was about 30 years ago. I did not want to pay $35,000…definitely more than the 62 should be.
