[VIDEO] Drag Battles Between C8 Corvettes and Camaros Range from Not Even Close to 'Dude, I Almost Had You!'

There’s nothing most car guys like better than some good old-fashioned competition. Here at CorvetteBlogger, we believe in giving the people what they want, so here’s another helping of drag race videos for your enjoyment! After watching the new Z06 go toe-to-toe with Italian royalty earlier this week, we’ve got another exciting wrinkle to throw into the mix today. It’s sibling rivalry day as C8 Stingrays and a Z06 take on a batch of what we can now confidently call “final-generation” Camaros.

Today’s subject video from the Wheels YouTube channel starts out with an uneven pairing worthy of the 1992 Dream Team. The left lane of race one is occupied by none other than the Gemini Project itself. We’re talking dual overhead cams, a flat-plane crankshaft, 8,600 RPM, and 670-horsepower of bespoke state-of-the-art engineering mounted mid-ship in an aerodynamic two-door wedge with a telepathic dual-clutch transmission and a launch control sequence that re-writes what we thought we knew about the limits of rear-wheel-drive architecture. Compared to that, the Black Camaro Super Sport – with the one-year face-lifted ’19 front clip – in the right lane might as well be bouncing a ball for Angola, but, admirably, it doesn’t back down. As expected, even without putting in 100% effort, the low-drag Z takes the checkered flag in this one by more than a full second (11.83 to 12.91) and 13 MPH (125.73 to 112.53). Nothing else to say here, really; let’s move on to the better matchups in the undercard!

At the 1:00 mark, things get interesting when another Black SS Camaro – this time a ’16-’18 model on 1LE-style wheels – steps into the Z’s former lane to square up with an Amplify Orange high-wing Z51 Convertible with dual black stripes for the first time. In the clash of LT1 and LT2 V8s, we have a lot more compelling pieces of film, and surprisingly, the Pony Car driver is the one that takes the holeshot. The Stingray quickly overcomes the Camaro’s early advantage and never looks back, but 11.76 @ 115.47 vs. 12.33 @ 115.12 is good enough to make bettors sweat a little!

A nearly identical pairing takes center stage in race three. This time, the Z51 droptop wears Red Mist Metallic, and the early Sixth-Gen SS is Nightfall Gray with shoes borrowed from the previous ZL1, but minor differences aside, it’s still mid-mounted 495 HP vs. 455 horses out front. This ‘Vette does what the Orange one should have off the line and leaves zero room for drama. Its 11.89 second quarter at 116.97 easily handles the Camaro’s 110.21 MPH, 13.05-second run.

The fourth and final dual sees the return of the Orange ‘Vette, which is met by another Nightfall SS, this time with the full 1LE track package that nets it an e-diff, Magride, dual-mode exhaust, better rubber (if any of these were still on stock tires), matte black accents, Recaros, and a mandatory manual transmission that features GM’s trick no-lift shift feature. What looks promising on paper quickly turns into a dud as the Camaro misses its launch and meanders its way to a 14.55 while the Stingray is able to cruise to victory lane with a 12.05.

This round goes to the older brother, but the lack of a true next-gen Camaro remains a depressing prospect for die-hard Bow Tie fans. After all, internal competition has always been a driving factor behind the continual improvement that the Corvette has enjoyed since its inception!
