They’re only original once, goes the old saying.

That adage certainly seems to apply to this 1966 Corvette Sting Ray convertible that’s been under the watchful care of the same owner since 1970!

Now, some 53 years later, he’s finally decided to part with his beloved Corvette, and it’s attracting a lot of attention on eBay, where 16 bids have already hit a whopping $70,400 with more than three days left in the auction. That’s still below the reserve figure he’s seeking, however.

And who can blame him for wanting to sell it for a nice figure? After all, taking such good care of a car for more than half a century certainly deserves to be rewarded. Purchased in 1970 when he got out of the service from a friend of his dad, the owner adds that his vintage Sting Ray remains “exactly as it was when I bought it.”

That includes the original Ermine White paint, the 327 V8 matching-numbers engine and four-speed manual transmission, factory knock-off wheels (all five of them, he says), both tops, and side exhaust. Options include power steering and power windows.

Of course, some parts have had to be replaced over the decades, like the carburetor and master cylinder, but in those cases, he still has the original parts in storage. Interestingly, the tires that were on the car when he bought it are still in place, so the new owner would definitely want to replace those as soon as possible, perhaps saving the originals as a conversation piece for the next owner.

Inside, the black interior is “just like when (I) bought it,” the seller says, careful to note that “this is no barn find, never any mice or cats sleeping on it.” The time has come, however, “to let somebody else take care of it as I have done all these years,” the seller says.

“This is just one sweet ride that drives just like it did when I brought it home,” he concludes.

  1. That’s just asinine that this guy has owned this car for 53 years and never replaced the tires on it.

  2. I’ve had my 1965 327/365 factory air tuxedo black coupe since 1969. My dad gave it to me when I was in 10th grade. It’s in my garage. Cruised Van Nuys Blvd in Southern California and grew up a gear head. It’s been a life of Corvettes and Corvette people. Living the legend.

  3. IIRC the factory knock-offs were painted black between the fins in ‘65 & ‘66. The ones on this C2 are silver between the fins which would be correct for a ‘63 or ‘64. So while there’s a good chance those were the wheels/tires on this ‘66 when he bought it, they’re not original to the car. Cavet emptor…
