Corvettes for Sale: 1964 Corvette Racer Turned Show Car Offered on Craigslist

This custom 1964 Corvette hardtop convertible was cool way before the first C8 Corvette ever hit the streets.

But its psychedelic paint job and other custom features sure have proven to be a lightning rod for enthusiasts nowadays, drawing cheers in some circles and jeers in others.

Personally, if we had the spare bucks, we’d be bringing this Sting Ray home to Georgia and then driving it to every car show we could find, where it would be sure to draw plenty of attention.

This “one off old custom like no other,” as the current owner describes his car, is being offered on craigslist out of the Florham Park, New Jersey area, for $69,500, though he says that price is “slightly negotiable.”

When the car was about a year old, Don Connelly converted it to a Pike’s Peak racer and it then went on to become a fixture on the International Show Car Association circuit in the late ’60s, taking the No. 1 points title for its class during the ’66-67 year.

In its early days, it didn’t look quite so wild, though, with an Ermine White paint job from the St. Louis factory. According to the current owner, the car eventually donned several different paint schemes in the late ’60s before the current custom lacquer paint was applied in the early ’70s.

The seller says that vintage paint job still “shows beautifully,” and the tuck and roll white interior is likewise said to remain “immaculate.” We really dig the engine bay, too, that is detailed with lots of polished aluminum and chrome, and the underside of the car is described as “super clean,” too. Another cool feature is the hardtop that is mounted onto the rear deck to allow easy access to the rear luggage compartment.

Starting life as a 327/375 horsepower fuelie with a four-speed and 4:11 rear end, the car now has been outfitted with a wicked-looking 1969 327 engine with an Edelbrock TR1Y intake and two Holley 450s.

Customized cars are sure to please some folks and make others sick to their stomach, but we love the fact that this one has endured half a century and continues to show young folks just “how it used to be done.”

  1. Nice to see that a few of these wild custom Corvettes from back in the day are still around. Too bad that this car doesn’t still have the over-the-top sidepipes shown in the old picture above — they would go so well with its current over-the-top paint job! I also see from the Craiglist pics that it appears to have a central drain hole incorporated into its bizarre “ducktail” rear spoiler, which would otherwise accumulate a lot of water during a wash or if out in the rain.
