So what do you do with that plastic Corvette bed when your kid inevitably grows up?

A Texas man named Gilbert has the most fun answer you’ll ever find.

The automotive technician in Katy, Texas used his talents to create what he jokingly calls the “Poorvette” out of the shell of a children’s bed and assorted other parts.

“It’s basically the poor man’s ‘Vette,” Gilbert explains. “When you can’t buy an actual Corvette, you build your own – simple as that.”

And boy, does it look like fun!

The Poorvette definitely surpasses the real thing when it comes to smiles per dollar. Just watch this crazy video if you don’t believe us.

Gilbert included a tubular frame, working gear shift, steering wheel, dashboard with speedometer and tachometer, and even a racing seatbelt for safety – along with a great-sounding engine from a Honda CBR600 F4 bike that makes it VERY LOUD!

Everyone wants to know the top speed of the Poorvette, and Gilbert admits “it’s probably faster than I’m wanting to go in it.”

Basically, he designed it to be able to do burnouts, donuts, and drifts – all chores that “it’s proven it can handle … quite well,” he says.

His favorite part of the build is “probably just how much of a handful it is to drive,” he says. “It is in essence a go-kart, but it definitely has a feel of something way bigger. It’s gonna take a lot of practice to be able to maneuver it perfectly, but that’s a chore

I look forward to.”

Indeed, he may even take on the big boys in the future.

“Maybe some day I’ll take it to an eighth-mile drag strip to get a little taste of what it’s capable of,” he says.

Unfortunately, Gilbert says his creation isn’t street legal, noting there “are a lot of hurdles to cross when you’re trying to register a homemade vehicle, especially in a big city like Houston.”

That’s why he didn’t put any lights on the Poorvette “because no matter how many lights you throw at it, it’ll probably never see street use.”

Likewise, the Poorvette doesn’t have a reverse gear, but Gilbert isn’t too worried about that. “The sound of a street bike engine on a go-kart is a sound that is unrivaled by any motor with reverse,” he says. “Plus who needs reverse whenever you can do a 180 drift?”

  2. Very cool and clever use of the components. I’d like to drive it. It would be a hit at any Corvette gathering.
