You’re looking at what could soon be the newest member of the million-dollar Corvette club.
This 1971 Corvette ZR2 is one of only two convertibles and one of just 12 ZR2s in total, and someone with deep pockets is predicted to be on the hook for an estimated $975,000 to $1 million to take it home after Mecum Monterey in California, slated for August 17-19.
Based on the legendary L88 chassis and known as “Zora’s Racer,” in homage to the legendary Corvette engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov, the ZR2s were shrouded in mystery, with no pre-production hype, road tests or leaked photographs.
The RPO ZR2 Special Purpose LS6 Engine Package featured the 454/425 horsepower Mark IV big-block V8 engine, connected to a Muncie M22 close-ratio “Rock Crusher” four-speed manual transmission. Back in the day, this engine option added a whopping $1,747 to the MSRP, roughly a third of the base price of $5,259.
The package also included transistorized ignition, high-capacity aluminum radiator with shroud delete, heavy-duty power disc brakes, and F41 Special Suspension with specific springs, shocks, and front and rear sway bars.
Besides its rarity, this ZR2 is the lowest-mileage such car in existence, with only 8,796 miles, and more than half a century later remains in unrestored and highly original condition with its factory Brands Hatch Green paint and black leather interior. It also includes an auxiliary hardtop and is documented with tank sticker, Protect-O-Plate and dealer shipping order.
Once a member of the famed Ed Foss Collection, this special Corvette is a multiple award winner, including induction into the Great Hall in 2011 and receiving the MCACN Triple Diamond Award after earning Bloomington Gold Certification, NCRS Top Flight Award, and MCACN Concours Gold.
