Corvettes for Sale: 1954 Corvette Corvair Motorama Recreation Offered at Auction

A show car replica that took four years to build is on the auction block at clasiq.com.

This recreation of the 1954 Motorama Corvair won three awards at the 2015 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance and earned “Personal Favorite” honors from the legendary George Barris at Corvette Funfest that same year. Even GM’s VP of Global Design Ed Welburn gave it his blessing.

So far, interest has been disappointing, at least monetarily, with the current bid of $70,000 falling well short of the asking price of $201,000 with the sale coming to an end this afternoon (May 23, 2023).

The car – said to be the childhood dream car of the current owner of the past 10 years – looks similar to a stock ’54 Corvette till you get to the roofline and rear end, where it takes on “a dose of European inspired sportscar flavor with an Italian flair,” according to the listing.

Coated in a beautiful shade of Crystal Red, this “Corvair” – a name that combines Corvette and Bel Air – features a two-tone red and cream interior with custom-designed Al Knoch bucket seats, custom window glass, gauges from a ’56 housed in the factory ’54 dashboard, and many other nice details.

Under the hood, the 265 V8 engine with a Holley four-barrel carburetor is connected to a 700R four-speed automatic transmission with a two-speed Powerglide shifter. The engine was built with a block with December 1953 codes and heads from November 1953, along with a 1955 265 cid Corvette carburetor. That originality continues to the rear end with a ’56 unit with a set of AC Delco shocks. The car also has disc brakes with ’54 suspension and steering parts.

Two Corvairs were created when this one was built. The other is owned by Ken Lingenfelter, the living Corvette legend and well-known car collector.

This car has only three miles on the odometer and remains “in crowd pleasing show condition as it was originally created,” according to the listing. “Those old enough to remember the Motorama car will be blown away as are those who are just discovering it.”

The listing continues: “Corvette dreams start when you are a kid, and to be able to own that car one day can be a life-long pursuit. If it doesn’t exist anymore you have to build it. Fortunately, that’s what we have here, a Corvette Concept Car that is a rare thing of beauty to behold. A faithful recreation built to this highly-skilled professional level is an opportunity that you should not miss. Mysterious and Legendary, the originals show car life ended in the crusher, and rumors of its survival are fan fiction. It lives on in this fantastic recreation and you can become a part of its history.”

  1. One person’s dream car, in not 100% replica form,(700R4 Transmission) doesn’t necessarily make it a high dollar desire of others, that’s the chance you take when you build something like this, I still think it’s a sharp car otherwise.
