While the new Corvette Convertible models have proved to be widely popular beyond anyone’s expectations, there is one area of the car that Chevy may have misjudged and that was not making the top of the engine viewable. Chevrolet instead offers a black heat shield that completely covers the top of the engine bay and the LT2 V8. The cover is only viewable for the 16 seconds that it takes to raise or lower the top, so what’s the point of having a viewable engine cover, right?

Having the ability to see the engine through the engine hatch is one of the main reasons why buyers opt for the Coupes as it’s one more element from other exotics and supercars that Chevy has incorporated. Many buyers of the convertible have wished for the same, and could it be that Chevy is about to make this happen?

We got the news about this from our friend Ken Berg over the weekend, who posted the following on the E-Ray/Z06 Facebook Group:

“Eureka! While messing around with ERay visualizer, I found something no one has seen. While building my HTC, I went to EXTERIOR, I saw red and silver engine covers. I clicked on one, the visualizer rotates the car to the back and you can see the engine cover thru the vent holes! When lowering the top, the engine cover is clearly visible! The Corvette team has listened! Check it out. I’m all in!!

While this might be written off as just a “glitch in the Matrix,” I was able to recreate it on the Corvette E-Ray’s visualizer and we were indeed allowed to add one of the custom LT2 engine covers to our convertible builds, and then it shows it to us while using the Roof Up/Down feature. Not only that, but you can see the Edge Red cover through the Convertible’s rear deck vents as well:

We’ve already seen the aftermarket step up and provide a see-thru cover that replaces the stock engine heat shield, and there have been some unsubstantiated rumors that Chevy engineers may be taking another look at it.

Would having the ability to see the top of your V8 engine be just the feature to make you switch to the convertible over the coupe? Let us know in the comments section below!

  1. Seven grand for in essence – a cover? Hmmm…a new low (or high) for GM. No thanks.

  2. Clear heat shield? Good. Seeing just a small slice of the engine through the decklid vents? Not good. One additional step would be needed: Add a clear, poly-carbonate window to the center of the decklid for an unobstructed view of the engine. Similar to the 2009-2013 ZR1 hood window. Easy peasy. I’m surprised someone hasn’t done this already.

  3. I am very pleased GM is attempting to show that beautiful mid engine on the convertible. I did buy a 2023 Coupe as that was important to me to see yet I am a convertible kind of guy. Too late for me now as the cost of a 2024 convertible (with eRay) will price it out of my comfort zone.

  4. Being able to see the top of the engine on a C8 convertible would not make me choose one over the coupe. I’ve always owned Corvette coupes as I am not a big fan of convertibles of any make of car. I think the C8 coupe looks better than the convertible. Since the rear window of the convertible doesn’t roll all the way down, it seems to me that driving a convertible with the top down wouldn’t be that much different than driving a coupe with the roof panel off.

  5. I’ve got the HTC and wouldn’t want anything else. I drive 80% of the time with the top down since I only drive in good weather. Plus it’s nice to have full use of the trunk and not have to stop the car to put the top up or down. Also very impressive to anybody watching the top action. To me the lines of the HTC are better too with the nacelles and middle vent. Looks more exotic than the hatchback look of the coupe. After driving the coupe at the Ron Fellows Driving School I also like the rear window vision of the HTC better, as you are looking through a vertical window rather than one on a long slope. No distortion.

  6. I have a 2021 HTC (white, Z51) and I recently installed one of the clear engine covers. Even if its not rational, when I put the top down I intentionally stand closer now so I can the engine for the few seconds it takes for the top to finish moving. I have deposit on an E-Ray and I will certainly be getting it in the HTC configuration. Being able to order a clear engine cover from the factory will be handy! Whatever year, make, and model of the Corvette you have, I hope you enjoy it a bunch.
