Do an informal survey the next time you’re stuck in traffic on the interstate, and see just how much the automotive landscape is a boring mixture of white, black, silver, and gray.

The occasional Torch Red or Rapid Blue Corvette really stand out in this sea of drabness.

The latest statistics support this idea, with grayscale colors accounting for a whopping 82 percent of new vehicles in 2022.

But there’s hope on the horizon for anyone who wants to see a more colorful automotive existence, according to GM’s Director of Global Color (yes, that’s a real job) Jennifer Widrick.

In a story in Chevrolet’s New Roads magazine, Widrick says her team’s job is to predict color preferences for the next five years, all the way to the 2028 model year.

Their research has led them to believe vibrant primary and compound colors like red, blue, orange, and green are on the way back, supporting that theory with a 2022 automotive paint color report from GM supplier BASF noting the popularity of yellow, green, orange, and violet is increasing.

That might explain why Chevrolet is introducing a new color for 2024 Corvettes, a light shade of green called Cacti.

But before you get too excited, a report from automotive supplier Axalta (formerly known as DuPont) points out that in 2022 white remained the most popular color in North America for the 16th year in a row, with gray and black in the runner-up positions, same as they have been for the past 25 years.

However, blue did manage to climb into the fourth spot for the second straight year. Blue was also fourth back in 2008, but that proved to be only a momentary blip on the color radar screen.

Stay tuned to see what happens over the next five years.

  1. GM bragging about a color renaissance is like Madonna bragging about her recent plastic surgery.

    Fire Jennifer Widrick, immediately.

  2. No mention of the the other new color for 2024 Sea Wolf Gray. Funny no mention of that new color in this article!

  3. That 🌈 rainbow queen doesn’t have a clue to what the sports car market wants. Save those colors for the Bolt, Jolts, or Volts that libtards drive. Maybe Toyota will hire her so she can decorate the new Prius.

  4. Rapid Blue is by far my favorite color of the C8. Sorry, the cacti color is horrible. Would like to see a dark Violet though, that might look good.

  5. I ordered my C7 in black because I wanted it to be harder for law-enforcement to see. You can spot a bright yellow car a mile away.

  6. I can’t understand why the 2023 Corvette can be dad I three choices of gray… and only one in black. How many reds? Whites? Blues? Perhaps gm should try a chartreuse to see if it sells

  7. After owning a Yellow Z06, I got my C8 in amplify Orange! Was so close to getting the rapid Blue, but picked the Orange, so many great colors to choose from, however Cacti looks like something on a Chevy Bolt!

  8. Fire Jennifer Widrick, immediately. Agreed. It’s a crime that Lime Greed from the failed auction isn’t available. as well as a matte black/gray.
