Kansas Man Surprised with 1,177 Percent Tax Hike on his 1979 Corvette Parts Car

Used cars have exploded in value over the past couple of years.

Just ask Don Hawley, owner of two 1979 Corvettes, one that he drives and the other that he keeps for spare parts.

Since buying the parts Corvette in 2015 for a thousand bucks, Hawley has never had to pay more than $61 in property taxes – that is, until last year when he received a tax bill for a whopping $718.

The Kansas man tells KMBC 9 News the increase was “pretty unrealistic” for a car that has no instruments, no interior and doesn’t even run.

The Douglas County Appraiser’s Office told Hawley that the car was revalued in 2022 according to state standards, using NADA data that valued the vintage C3 at $12,100.

In a statement to KMBC, the appraiser’s office says Hawley received notice about the increase last May through a Notice of Value Change. It wasn’t until Nov. 30 that Hawley contacted the office and was told of his options, which included a Payment Under Protest application with instructions on how and when to file. They also advised him to submit further documentation to correct the appraisal.

Hawley admits getting the application from the office but hadn’t filed it as of Dec. 29, claiming he didn’t know about the Dec. 20 deadline (which is specified in the document).

“It’s an affordable hobby,” Hawley says, “but being punished with the taxes, that’s inappropriate.”

  1. Property tax on a car? Sounds like he kept it licensed. So don’t pay it. what are they going to do? Thought California was the worst for gouging everyone, but here we can non-opt a vehicle and there are no yearly fees.

  2. This country was founded because a government was charging unjust taxes. History repeats itself as we have a runaway government

  3. I have always been irritated at states that charge you a sales tax for purchasing a car and then a tax every year for the value of the car. In GA, it’s call ad valorem and it used to be due on your birth month. A few years ago, you paid it all at one time and was done with it. When I was in VA, they call it personal property tax and they hammered you with Federal, State, and personal property tax due dates inside of six weeks.

Annual registration and safety inspections should be the only state-imposed costs after paying sales tax on a vehicle.

  4. ALWAYS SOMETHING MISSING IN A STORY, TAX ON PARTS CAR IN A GARAGE WHAT THE HELL IS THAT ABOUT?

  5. I thought the car had to registered and on the road. The property tax is supposed to be used for road maintenance and repair. So how is it he is taxed for a parts car.?This is where our country is headed and it’s getting ridiculous.I wouldn’t pay it and let them take it to court so the state can explain how a non running in registered parts car can be taxed!!

  6. The whole concept is bullshit, you pay a sales tax when you buy a car, that should be it, besides the yearly registration, utterly ridiculous you have to pay taxes on a car every year based on it’s value. Thankfully we don’t have that bull shit tax here in Pennsylvania, I pay $37 a year registration on my cars and $92 on my pickup.

  7. We have that bullshit tax in North Carolina where I live. Every year you pay your tax and tag together the month your annual vehicle inspection is due. Fortunately the state has always way undervalued my vehicles including my Corvettes. At least that minimizes the tax I have to pay on my vehicles so I can’t bitch about that.

  8. Dispose of the plate, tags, all registration documents, keep the title, never drive it on a public roadway, and tell the goberment to go shove-it.

  9. The very idea that a government can increase any tax, on anything or anyone, by such a hug percentage in a year’s time is simply criminal. Followed to its logical conclusion, this is a way for the government to disposes anyone of any property, no matter if they have the means to buy it and maintain when at time of purchase. Every one of our founding fathers, from most to least conservative, must be turning over in their graves at the very idea of this.

  10. In parallel: My daughter lives near Seattle and drives a little Toyota Prius. Her annual tabs include some $300 for “the homeless.” The relationship of that problem to her vehicle is irrelevant to the Democrats in power. Sounds a bit like Kansas.
