Grandpa just wants to have a beautiful cruiser.

But his grandson, the host of the Horsepower Depot channel on YouTube, surprises him with the potent production coaxed out of the crate motor installed in his 1962 Corvette convertible.

Grandpa did the entire car himself, with a full frame-off restoration.

The car, which now features an LS3 crate engine hooked to a 4L60 automatic transmission, looks great with its slick silver paint job over a modernized red interior updated with Dakota Digital gauges and Vintage Air.

It took several days to get a new firmware update installed on the Holley Terminator X Max system that controls the LS3, but the results were definitely worth it.

Before running the dyno tests, Grandson predicts the car would make in the neighborhood of 375 horsepower, and his first three test runs with various timing and fueling changes do in fact yield 371.8, 386.9 and 399.8 horsepower.

While Grandpa was saying that was plenty good enough for him, Grandson was determined to get even more performance so he removed the lower-quality air filter to keep it from disintegrating and ruining their high-dollar crate engine and see what effect that had on the power.

Indeed, with no filter at all, the results were amazing, with the LS3 now producing a whopping 436.2 horsepower, more than enough for Grandpa to have a good time cruising around. In fact, on the video, someone says in the background says “Too much power for a 73-year-old guy.”

“This car surprises us all,” Grandson says. “We made way more power than we were expecting.”

  1. Gorgeous 1962 model – my high school dream car was silver/red fuelie 4-speed and I was working for $1.00/hr., poor me. At their ripe old age now, C1s don’t need any 600-800-1000 HP to impress the C&C crowd. Big thumbs up for a tasteful restoration.

  2. Very nice, someone needs to kick who ever the A-hole was that said it’s to much power for a 70 something right in the nuts. Probably drives a Mustang.

  3. There’s plenty of 70 something year old guys driving around in Corvettes with more than 436 HP. Look at how many of them own Corvettes ranging from the C6 Z06, all the C7’s and all the C8’s plus other modified Corvettes.

  4. I’m one of those 70+ guys driving a 67 Corvette with an L-79 with 400 hp and a 2011 Grand sport w/ 436 hp who ever thinks that’s too much power for and old man, well the Gunny says KMA

  5. Of course, Donny, you’re right. Most guys who are friends bust on each other all the time to avoid boredom and have some laughs. 🙂
