A Washington, D.C., Corvette owner became a prime example of a burgeoning car theft problem that is plaguing the nation’s capital.

Fox 5 News reported this week about the woman, Jaclyn Baker, who told them that brazen thieves in a tow truck rolled up in front of her 27th Street NW home in Georgetown just before 3:40 a.m. on Feb. 28, hooked it to her 2016 Corvette Stingray, and drove away, horn blaring briefly – all in a matter of seconds.

The entire incident was captured on video by a neighbor’s Ring Security Camera, and it’s still painful for Baker to watch, considering her emotional attachment to her Arctic White beauty.


“So as soon as this model of Corvette came out, I saw it at the DC auto show and I immediately knew that that was my dream car,” Baker told a reporter as she recently walked along her neighborhood street.

“That was my baby. I bought it brand new, and it’s a Corvette. I take a lot of pride in that, and I baby that car. So to see it kind of pulled off in the middle of the night at 3 in the morning, it was shocking.”

The theft took an even more shocking turn in May when police recovered the car, not exactly ready to be enjoyed with the roof panel off, however.

“Somebody had been shot and killed in the front seat,” she explained.

Auto thefts and carjackings have been a growing problem in Washington since late 2020, with DC Police stats showing 329 carjackings so far in 2022, an increase of 52 percent over 2021, when D.C. finished second-highest for auto thefts in the country.

While car thefts are up just 3 percent this year, Bob Passmore with the American Property Casualty Insurance says insurance companies lump car thefts and carjackings in the same category, and the big increase in carjackings – including a 73 percent jump in carjackings with a gun – have led to dramatic increases in insurance rates.


“Auto thefts are up across the country and inflation is just like, anyone going to the grocery store can see the impact on inflation,” Passmore said. “Auto insurance is no different because the cost of things that auto insurance pays for like medical care and collision repair and the cost of total vehicles have all been going up. So, that’s going to have an impact on rates.”

Asked by Fox 5 who she thinks is responsible for doing more to address the car theft problem, Baker had a quick answer: “Everybody. The people themselves. It’s got to stop.”

  1. In California, car theft is like shoplifting, not a crime. No jail time. Unbelievable. A guy stole the same car twice in one day and was charged with 14 car thefts in less than 3 weeks…he was let out every time. Except the last time when the judge figured some way to keep him in. He was outraged that his rights had been violated. Gavin Newsom coddles criminals, homeless and illegals. Remember his name…he will be running for president.

  4. This is what happens in all big cities run by Democrats. They reduce police funding and let the criminals walk. If any of you are thinking of voting Democrat in the midterms, just remember that you may be voting this kind of crime and higher insurance rates into your own community.
