[VIDEO] Professional Detailers Go to Work Inside and Out on this Filthy 1974 Corvette

The secret to a clean car isn’t very difficult to figure out: elbow grease, elbow grease, and more elbow grease.

Just witness this 21-minute video from the guys at WD Detailing, who recently took on the unenviable task of bringing a nasty 1974 Corvette coupe back to life – for the second time!

After their uncle’s Stingray had sat in a barn for 15 years, the guys cleaned up the exterior for him a couple of years ago, only to see him ignore the car again for the past two years.

This time, they not only bring the dirty-again purple exterior paint roaring back to life, taking heed of the desperate plea scribbled on the hood to “WASH ME NOW,” but they also rejuvenate the black interior.’

Sadly, a lot of these ‘74s are probably being ignored by their owners, considering they’re no longer nearly as popular as they were back in the day when 37,502 new ones were sold – up more than 5,000 over the previous year, in fact.

Chevy introduced front and rear rubber bumpers on the Corvette for the first time in ’74, and while the new look may not be to the liking of chrome bumper fans these days, I can remember being excited back then about the “improvements” being made to our beloved Stingray and just wishing I was old enough to buy one.

In the video, WD Detailing – which on its YouTube channel offers “some insane transformations of dirty vehicles, barn finds, nasty carpets and seats” to let viewers “learn a thing or two about detailing along the way” – first tackles the exterior, bringing the custom purple paint back from the grave with an assortment of soaps, sprays, brushes, sponges, waxes, and buffers.

Next up comes the interior, with the guys even going to the trouble of removing the two bucket seats so they can get up close and personal to clean the carpet, remove a weird-looking purple tint applied somewhere along the way to the rear window, and freshen the door panels, dash, console, and instrument panels. They also tackle the Saturn floor mats that are being used for some reason – maybe they just happen to fit, the guys surmise.

By the end of their busy day of work, this Corvette – while still not perfect – has taken on a much larger persona and we’re sure most folks would now be proud to drive it down the road. Let’s just hope it sees much busier days ahead than it has for the past couple of decades wasting away.

  1. Maybe the owner should by a friggen Honda and sell this to someone who will care about and take care of it. I used to run a detail shop and I had an 81′ Vette come in that was in a field for several years, I was told to “see what you can do”. It was Sea frost Green Met I think the color was with matching interior. About a week later after many hrs of sweating, the customer came in with his wife that was telling him he was wasting money and time trying to bring it back to life, I had it out sitting in the sun and the guys wife burst into tears when she saw it. Even her husband was on the edge of emotion, he kept saying “I can’t believe this is the same car” “it looks better now then it did when it was new”. Needless to say they were VERY happy, besides paying the bill with a smile he tipped me a brand new $100 bill. Made me feel good, it was cool as hell. Ya and I agree with the other poster. Like I said it needs a new owner.

  2. Seats out carpet removed for cleaning and drying this nothing new if you really want bring a car back. The word detail means next to nothing to a few grand. It’s all subjective. Attention to detail is key, every single part that can be seen must be massaged.

  3. Kevin I think that Corvette you detailed was actually an 82. For the 82 Corvette they offered a one year only color combo of Silver Green Metallic over Silver Green interior. I remember seeing a small number of 82s in that color and I really liked it.
