The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is already investigating nearly three million Teslas for reports of running red lights and drifting into opposing lanes. Now, a San Diego crash caught on dashcam is adding fresh fuel to the conversation — and unfortunately, a C7 Corvette owner is the latest victim.

The footage, posted to Reddit by user CaptainShiryu, shows a Tesla Model 3 approaching an intersection near the northbound Genesee exit on Interstate 5. The light is red. Other vehicles are stopped. The Tesla doesn’t even tap the brakes.

“Didn’t even slow down,” one commenter wrote.

The Model 3 plows into the left side of the Arctic White Corvette, spinning the sports car violently and ripping one of its rear wheels completely off. The wheel rolls across the intersection as the light turns green and oncoming traffic begins to move.

“That poor Corvette,” another user said.

“It’s a Porvette now,” someone else joked darkly.

The clip is only 12 seconds long, leaving major questions unanswered. There’s no official police report yet, and the video doesn’t reveal what happened in the moments leading up to the crash.

The Tesla’s brake lights don’t illuminate until after it has already entered the intersection, but the short clip doesn’t reveal whether the driver hit the pedal late or if the car’s emergency braking system reacted on its own. And while the crash looks similar to incidents highlighted in NHTSA’s ongoing probe into Teslas equipped with Full Self Driving, nothing in the video confirms that any driver assist feature was active at the time.

“Unbelievable… Are people even awake at the wheel anymore?” one Redditor wrote.

Another added, “La Jolla is crazy. Red light runners all the time.”

The Model 3 — a pre facelift version — suffered heavy front end damage. The Corvette’s damage appears severe enough that a total loss is possible.

If the Tesla driver is found at fault, their liability insurance would typically cover the Corvette’s damage up to policy limits. But the broader issue remains: whether driver assistance systems are contributing to dangerous habits behind the wheel.

“It’s always a dumb Tesla driver,” one commenter claimed.

Another, identifying as a BMW driver, said, “The amount of idiotic Tesla drivers is astounding… the entitlement is wild.”

Still, the crash may simply be human error — a driver distracted, inattentive, or reckless. FSD is a Level 2 system, meaning it requires constant supervision and is not autonomous. Whether the system was engaged or not, the responsibility ultimately falls on the person behind the wheel.

One Redditor summed it up bluntly:

“Stopping at the red light like the other cars would have prevented this.”

Corvette fans felt the sting.

“Oh gosh, how scary for the Corvette. I hope they’re ok,” one user wrote.

Another tried to lighten the mood: “I hope the Corvette driver enjoys their upgrade to a C8.”

Whether this crash becomes part of NHTSA’s ongoing investigation remains to be seen. But the video is another reminder — for Tesla drivers and everyone else — that no technology can replace paying attention.

  1. Computer enabled complacency. And I’m feeling some kind of way about it.

Too much tech interfering with just being able to drive. No option to buy a no-GPS, no-4G equipped C8.

  2. If the Tesla driver wasn’t injured in the accident I’m pretty sure he’d be going to the hospital for one or more injuries IMO.
