The best thing we can say about this 1974 Corvette coupe currently up for sale on Craigslist out of the Springfield, Illinois area is that it won’t require a big investment since the dealer is asking $8,988.
That small initial investment would likely grow quite a bit, though, as a new owner moves forward into what promises to be an extensive restoration process.
The car definitely will need some bodywork to fix various cracks and chips and then a new paint job, not to mention a completely new interior to boot. And, who knows how well the 350 engine runs since the ad doesn’t provide any information about that or really any information about the car at all – other than lots of attention on how to take advantage of the dealer’s “EZ FINANCING.”
The ’74s marked the Corvette’s switch to body-color urethane bumpers on both ends of the car to meet tougher federal crash guidelines. In fact, an easy way to spot this model year is to look for the one-year-only seam down the middle of the rear bumper. By ’75, the seam was gone.
The new look must have suited buyers, who turned out in near-record numbers to purchase 37,502 Stingrays – just shy of the previous record of 38,762 set in 1969. In fact, I can remember drooling over the ’74 sales brochure as a teenager and dreaming of the day I would join the Corvette club. In hindsight, I should have bought a used ’63 split window for my first Corvette instead of the ’80 I wound up with in 1983. Actually, I wish I had bought five or six of those C2s back in the day – ah, the ignorance of youth!
