Corvettes for Sale: Grandfather's 9K-Mile 1981 Corvette Offered for $10,500

This ultra-low-mileage 1981 Corvette – one of 40,606 coupes produced that year – may soon leave the family that’s owned it since it left the Bowling Green factory more than four decades ago.

The owner says he inherited this red over black Corvette from his grandfather, who bought the car new, but now he’s offering it on Craigslist out of the Las Vegas area for $10,500.

Most impressive of all the information provided in the ad is that the car is said to have been driven just 9,000 miles during the past 41 years, and we hope there is documentation to prove that figure for the satisfaction of any future caretakers of this vintage C3 who might be interested one day.

We’re not sure where the car spent its life, only that it is now in Vegas. The location is critical because the seller points out that it’s been stored outside its entire life – if it’s been in the arid West that whole time and not in, say, snowy Minnesota, that might mean rust underneath the fiberglass body needn’t be a worry.

The seller notes that the car has “a little bit of paint chock blemishes from old age,” but the photos appear to show a good 10-footer at least so maybe a new paint job wouldn’t be absolutely necessary right away, since a new owner’s goal might be to keep it as original as possible.

The black interior looks to be in good condition, though again it’s hard to tell from the photos that accompany the listing.

We’re told the original 350 V8 engine that produced 190 horsepower – hooked to an automatic transmission – remains in place, not all that surprising considering the low odometer, after all. While we’re always worried about cars that have been sitting more than they’ve been driven, the seller does promise that this Corvette “runs and drives like a dream with lots of pick up power.”

We’ve owned two of these late C3s and really enjoyed driving them – of course, that was before we had had the pleasure of driving a C6, C7, and C8, so our point of view may be different these days.

Still, we’re glad to see a reasonable asking price of $10,500 for this Corvette. If someone wants to add a new paint job, however, their investment could soar.

What steps would you take with this Corvette?

  1. If the seller can’t prove the 9000 miles, then the car doesn’t have 9000 miles. It’s as simple as that.
