One of the dilemmas faced by some C2 owners is constantly worrying about getting a rock chip rolling down the road or picking up a door nick in a parking lot.

Whoever winds up with this barn find 1966 Corvette coupe won’t have to worry about that, however.

This Sting Ray – a California car said to have sat in a hangar since 1977 – has been mechanically restored but left with a body patina that will likely be a polarizing issue for our readers, who will either love it or hate it. Count us in the former group as we think it looks super cool with just enough of the original Rally Red remaining.

While the original 427/390 horsepower V8 engine is missing, it’s been more than adequately replaced with a 20,000-mile 6.2-liter LS3 out of a Camaro SS that required no modifications to the body or frame to fit under the hood. Many other modern upgrades have also been installed, including an all-new restomod fuel system, Dewitt aluminum radiator, hydraulic clutch, FiTech programmable stand-alone custom wire harness with touchscreen, all-new four-wheel disc brakes, and Detroit Speed headlight kit.

He says the car “runs and drives and is extremely powerful.” The rear end is stamped AZ, which indicates a ’66 427 four-speed manual transmission with 3:53 gears, “but this car is a beast so we believe it has 4:54 gears.”

While the exterior doesn’t look like new – except for the period correct knock-off wheels with new redline tires – it’s a completely different story inside where the owner has installed new Al Knoch leather seats, armrests, door panels, headliner, and carpet.

We’d be inclined to leave this car as-is for the foreseeable future, with the notion always in the back of our mind to opt for a slick paint job at some point in the future, which should increase the value way above the current “Buy It Now” price of $69,995. So far, 27 bids have maxxed out at $60,000, with the auction slated to come to a close Wednesday afternoon.

So what would you do with this classic C2 reminiscent of Dolly Parton’s song “Coat of Many Colors”?

  1. This is way beyond patina. This is circus freak. Put at least a decent paint job on it and then go out and earn those rock chips! At least it will look like a Corvette.

  2. looks like factory defective paint , GM should……jus kidding i’d keep the freek , Freeky and drive the hell out of it….. Off the subject but , Earnhart Chevy in Tallahassee had the Z06 today. Sweet , i sat in it ,,,duh – so wat ….:-) but if you like hot cars and are near , stop & look…very nice dealership

  3. I’d just shoot it Hot Rod primer gray, paint a number on the side and drive it like I stole it.

  4. I think I would drive it for a while as is. But probably get tired of the look and gradually start working on that body. The rear flares are acceptable, and I can live with six tail lights. I like it.
