[ACCIDENT] Florida Man In a C8 Corvette Taken Out By a Tow Ball on a GMC Acadia in South Florida

Maybe the driver of this C8 Corvette just couldn’t see the camouflaged GMC Acadia stopped in front of him on a Miami highway this week.

All jokes aside, we’re glad no one was injured in this crash that occurred on Florida State Route 112, leaving this Zeus Bronze Stingray with what could be major front-end damage. Some people on the internet are even speculating that the car could have to be totaled if it suffered a damaged or bent frame.

The Acadia owner posted on Facebook that the Corvette driver ran into the back of his vehicle, slamming into the trailer hitch protruding from the bumper and causing serious damage to the Corvette, including a cracked windshield.

No official accident reports were available since the Acadia driver says he took photos and since there was no damage to his SUV, he didn’t pursue the Corvette driver after he “drove away pretty quickly without giving me any information.”

The GMC driver added the following post, complete with four photos of the incident:

On today’s episode of “Driving in Miami” we’re featuring an entitled driver during rush hour thinking they not only own a $90,000 corvette but they also own the road……and vanity plates…..I will never take my tow ball off EVER!!!

We can personally attest to the damage that can be inflicted by a little tow ball. A few years ago waiting in line in our GMC Yukon XL to drop off our son at school, we felt a tiny bump, got out to see what had happened, and had to suppress a laugh when we saw the perfect circular hole in the front bumper of the car that had just run into us at probably less than 5 mph.

We’re always sad to see any Corvette damaged, but especially a C8 since it can sometimes be difficult to get replacement parts at this stage of production … or a replacement car if it has to be totaled. Since the pavement appears to be dry in photos taken at the accident scene, we have to assume this serves as a grim reminder always to pay attention and use caution when you’re in congested traffic.

One possible ray of light for the C8 owner: Some people commented on Facebook that the GMC appears to have tinted taillights, which are illegal in Florida.

  1. Looks like the GMC was originally white. When someone “wraps” their vehicle with some bizarre pattern and darkens their tail lights and brake lights, my poor old school brain cannot begin to understand what is going on. Looks like some toddlers toy to me.

  2. Something seems odd about this whole situation. Would think it would be illegal to drive away from an accident of this magnitude. Also hitting the ball hitch that hard may have damaged something underneath the vehicle. There might be more to this story I bet.

  3. Agree — the damage to the Corvette does not appear to coincide with what I would expect from rear-ending a tow ball equipped Acadia. The pointed nose of the Corvette and the rear of the Acadia both appear undamaged but the Corvette’s right front fender is effectively gone, which would suggest to me that the Corvette was at a 45 degree or so angle when it hit the back of the Acadia, or possibly that the Corvette was crossing behind the Acadia and caught its right front corner on the protruding tow ball. Strange.

  4. Handled collision claims in the field for 32 years along with approx 1 million miles of driving, trailer hitches always win. . No excuse on this one, the C8 driver was at fault no matter what happened in front of him. Drive super defensive and this will not happen.

  5. Let’s see … an SUV with camo, tinted tails, and a ball hitch – oh, and New York plates.
Now, it doesn’t excuse the C8 from running into it, but …
BTW, unlike the SUV, I only my the hitch on when I’m towing, otherwise I pull it out. It takes 10 seconds to unclip.

  6. you are TDC on removing unused hitch balls. have you ever caught one on the shin ? that’ll make ya squeel like a ????:-)

  7. I will say one thing if I ran traffic laws no truck or car would be allowed to have a tow hitch installed when not in use. I have seen people walk into hitches and trucks back into the car behind them because they fail to allow for th3 6 to 12 ” that the hitch protrudes. From the looks of the car he clipped the hitch but he probably would have hit the truck worse if not for the hitch.

  8. I always leave my tow hitch on just for that reason. Too many people don’t pay attention to their driving. I do have a moose cover over it that gets the drivers behind me their attention for the most part.

  9. Notice the shattered window shield imprint….looks like the passenger was not waring his seat belt!
