They say a car is original only once.

If that’s the case, you might want to keep an eye on this 1966 Corvette coupe if it becomes available one day.

We found the car on the website of Boulder Motorcar Company, where it’s noted that this vintage Sting Ray is in a personal collection and currently not for sale. Circumstances sometimes change, though, so if you’re interested in an award-winning Corvette in unrestored condition, you might want to keep this one in mind for future reference.

A mechanical engineering student named John Hersh ordered this Corvette at H&K Motor Sales in Continental, Ohio on Jan. 10, 1966 but a week later made a change order, adding the N11 off road exhaust to a spec that already included the L72 427/425 horsepower engine, M21 close-ratio four-speed manual transmission, T01 nylon blackwall 7.75-15 4-ply gold stripe tires, F41 special purpose front and rear suspension, K66 transistorized ignition, A02 Soft Ray tinted windshield, P48 special cast aluminum knockoff wheels, and N36 telescopic steering shaft.

Hersh thought the car would be delivered in about six weeks, but his decision to choose the 3.08 gear ratio delayed production of the car. Apparently, GM had suspended that gearing with the L72 427, but Hersh was able to convince the Corvette production scheduler (through a contact at the General Motors Institute in Flint, Michigan) that he had made that choice because its low RPMs at highway speed would make for a strong touring car. The car was subsequently built on April 8, 1966 with that gear ratio.

Hersh would keep the car until 2012, driving it regularly for the first 10 years, then off and on through 1991 when he made significant repairs and maintenance. Since he sold the car to Miller Motors in Findlay, Ohio, two more people have owned it, first in 2012 and now in 2021.

If you’re into perfection, this is not the car for you. The original Laguna Blue lacquer paint definitely shows signs of its age, but the body has never been hit. Meanwhile, the original black interior is still in place, other than the headliner.

Underneath, Corvette Repair of Valley Stream, New York removed the chassis in 2014 for a complete refurbishment of the frame, trailing arms, bushings, and control arms before reinstalling the original drivetrain that retains its character with peeling paint.

After then going on the show circuit, the car has consistently racked up big honors, including Bloomington Gold / Survivor Bronze Certified in 2014, Bloomington Gold / Gold Certified OEM Engine in 2017, NCRS Top Flight (Chapter) in 2014 and 2017, and MCACN Concours Gold Certified, MCACN Triple Diamond Certification, and MCACN / David Burroughs Pick Award Winner – all in 2017.

Documentation is impressive, with the current owner retaining the original dealer order form, original dealer invoice, photocopy of original window sticker, original Request to Change Order form (dated Jan. 17, 1966), original Corvette Owner’s Card, and original keys with H&K Motors key fob.
