Corvettes on eBay: 1963 Convertible VIN #34 with 'Lab Frame 70' Tag Attached

There’s never a shortage of Corvettes up for grabs on eBay. Pick any generation and there’s a slew of options waiting for you. We recently happened upon this very early production C2 on the ‘bay and it could be yours.

According to the eBay ad this particular C2 was the 13th convertible built in a run of 25 preproduction cars. The actual VIN is #0034. The NCRS Shipping Data Report shows it was delivered to Dealer 000 in Zone 00 which is known to be General Motors. The chassis sports a tag reading “Lab Frame 70″ which looks to be very similar to the frame tag on the VIN 101 Test Lab 61 Corvette we’ve told you about before. The seller goes on to state that the car was “tested with Fuel Injection Power (and) HD brakes.” He surmises that the car was used by a GM executive a was sent to test with a matching 1963 coupe.

The ad says that the driveline is all date code correct. It goes on to reference the 327/340hp engine and mentions that the fuelie unit is long gone. We’re not sure what exactly the seller is getting at here since the 340hp engine wasn’t fuel injected (the 360hp version was). It does have a 4-speeed transmission as well.

Both the seller and the trim tag indicate that the car was born in Nassau Blue with a blue interior. The build date shows A1 which was the first week of production in later 1962. Today the car wears white paint, a cool set of Dayton wire wheels, and C3-era side exhaust. A big old molded-in spoiler was added to the rear end at some point in time.

Based on the photos, the car looks overall to be in decent driver condition. We see some wear and fading on the interior and several missing components under the hood. The seller wraps the ad up simply saying “It runs and drives”.

This is a confusing car. While it is one of the earliest C2’s we’ve seen, there’s not a lot of information to go on. The NCRS data report shows it was delivered to GM, but there’s no documentation showing what GM did with it. You’d think that with such a unique car there’d be more proof of what you’re bidding on. We’d also like to see more detailed photos of the car as well. Savvy buyers will want lots of information.

The starting bid is $42,500 which isn’t too far off the mark for a driver-quality 1963 with a color change. As of this writing, no one has bid yet. Low VIN cars always get collectors fired up, but this ad leaves us wanting more details on what could be a very desirable car.

For your reference, the Test Lab 61 Corvette was a no-sale at $110k at Mecum Kissimmee earlier this year. If you’re interested in this early C2, get to work now as the auction ends on Saturday and 8:37pm Eastern.

  1. Nothing confusing about the 340/360 hp. Sounds like the car was built with the FI engine (360hp) The same engine with a Carter AFB was 340 hp. The VIN suffix would tell which engine the car came with (RE-340hp and RF-360hp).
