C8 Corvette Secrets: The 2020 Corvette is the First to have a Flat Underbody

When it comes to perfecting the aerodynamics of the mid-engine C8 Corvettes, the Corvette team worked closely with the engineers at Pratt & Miller to take what has been learned on the race track and transfer that technology to the new streetcars.

One of the new innovations to come from racing to the C8 Corvette is the inclusion of a flat underbody where the entire underside of the car is enclosed with panels with just a few access holes for the oil filter and the like. Chevrolet displayed a C8 Corvette on its side at the California Reveal to give us an idea of how smooth that underbody is:

Corvette’s Vehicle Performance Manager Alex MacDonald addressed the new flat underbody during his talk about the 2020 Corvettes at Spring Mountain. He tells us

“A Corvette first…Flat underbody. If you’re not familiar with why that’s not a good idea, it’s kind of ‘free lunch’ where you get lower drag and more downforce and it’s just generally nice to have on a performance aero package.”

As a comparison, we also have this view of the C7 Corvette Stingray turned on its side at SEMA.

We’ve only seen that rotisserie display with the C8 at the Tustin, California Reveal so trying to find new photos or videos of the underside is nearly impossible. However, it just so happens that one of our YouTuber friends in Bowling Green came up with some video from the Corvette Assembly Plant and he had the opportunity to do a walk around of the transporter full of C8 Corvettes:

  1. Nice to have on the track but much higher labor costs in the shop! Also covers up a multitude of issues on the lift that may go undetected.
