Barrett-Jackson wasn’t the only collector car auction happening in Scottsdale last week. In fact, there were three auctions in place. Russo and Steele and RM auctions also host their own Scottsdale exhibitions during the week. And you may be surprised to learn that an 1967 L88 Roadster was on the block at RM Auction’s Arizona Biltmore auction. According to Autoblog.com, the bidding for the Corvette reached a high of $1,550,000 but was a no-sale as it failed to reach to the seller’s reserve. Only 20 L88 427 ci Corvettes were produced in 1967.
The L88 was first owned by Tony DeLorenzo, Jr, son of Anthony G. DeLorenzo who was in charge of GM’s public relations from 1957-1979. Tony bought the Corvette and headed straight for the track where it was raced until retirement in 1982. The Corvette was restored and has certificates from both Bloomington Gold and the NCRS for Top Flight.
To help promote the sale, this Corvette could have used some of the same marketing mojo that Proteam Corvettes used for pump up a fairly ordinary L36 427/390 hp coupe that just happened to be the last 1967 Corvette produced. So why RM Auctions and not Barrett-Jackson? Sellers Reserve….
