Last week the big news to hit the Corvette performance world was that HP Tuners had finally cracked GM’s E68 engine control modules that govern the 5.5L V8 engines found in the C8 Corvette Z06, ZR1, and ZR1X.
One of those engine tuners excited about the possibilities for more power in these cars is Alex Peitz of Peitz Performance Tunes. Utilizing HP Tuners software, he now has full control over the factory EMC and has already dived head first by tuning a Z06 that is now making some crazy horsepower numbers.
We caught this video of him with a tuned and modded Z06 on a Mustang dyno and thought that would be an excellent start to see just what can be done with the Z06 platform. The Z06 has their Bravo Plus package, which includes a turbo kit, direct port methanol injection, and Dodson sportsman clutches.
The baseline performance of the Z06’s LT6 was a corrected horsepower of 533 hp and 375 lb-ft of torque. Alex first starts with an initial dyno run on 93 octane and without methanol injection. With just 10 pounds of boost, the Z06 produced 775 RWHP and 595 lb-ft of torque. He adds that this setup is compatible with the stock clutches. Peak torque was observed at around 5,800 RPM and 11 pounds of boost and so the total gain was around 242 horsepower.
Next up, Alex adds a direct port methanol injection and increased the boost to 12 pounds. That resulted in 903 RWHP and 659 lb-ft of torque. But he’s not done yet! With another 2 lbs of boost for 14 total, the LT6 produces 983 hp which is 1,082 hp uncorrected. He adds if this Z06 was on a dynojet, it would be well over 1,000 hp.
On the final run with the boost turned up to 15 lbs of boost, he made 1,016 horsepower to the wheels and 699 lb-ft of torque. That’s nearly double the stock run on the 5.5-liter V8 engine. He again reiterates that the Mustang dyno results are about 13% lower than what you would see on a Dynoject. He shows us that number as well and it’s an impressive 1189 RWHP! With prices of new Z06s discounted these days, he makes a point of saying you can now pick one up and easily create a “ZR1 killer.”
Tuning the Z06 has been a long time coming, and Alex is pretty excited about this as you can see. We would be too if we had just created the highest horsepower C8 Z06 in the world! Lets see what you can do WITHOUT the turbo kit.
I cannot imagine anyone being illogical enough to opt for boosting the LT6, vs just buying a stock LT7. Worse, the allure of the LT6 features the n/a FPC sound quite prominently. That would be lost by boosting it. And a boosted LT6 will not have a factory warranty.
This is even more inane than claiming that a C8GS will somehow improve their driving abilities over the SR.
