By the time the 1969 model year rolled around, Chevrolet’s third generation Corvette had already cemented itself as an American performance icon.
Now 57 years later, one of these cars surfaces on a site like eBay, a Corvette that’s been waiting decades for the right hands to bring it back to life.
Sitting today in Virginia Beach is one of those finds: a 1969 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible, numbers matching from nose to tail, including the big-block engine.
This Stingray left the St. Louis assembly line with a combination that still makes collectors drool — the optional 427/390 horsepower Turbo Jet V8, paired with a 4 speed manual transmission, all wrapped in rare Monza Red paint over black vinyl.
Today, however, the now-primered Corvette sits as a mostly complete, non running project, a survivor with 57,101 miles on the clock and a clear Virginia title to prove it. The original GM VIN and trim tags remain in place.
And while the big block isn’t currently firing, it turns freely, a promising start for the next owner. The engine bay is intact — the only obvious omission is the fan shroud — and the drivetrain remains original, though a new clutch and pressure plate will be needed before the car sees pavement again.
For a C3 project, the structural news is unusually good. The rolling frame is super solid, free from the rust issues that can plague unrestored examples. The metal birdcage and windshield frame — two of the most critical and failure prone areas on these cars — are described as excellent. That foundation alone puts this Stingray ahead of many project grade Corvettes.
Cosmetically, the car needs some TLC. Photos reveal previous body damage on the passenger side front fender and the right rear deck and quarter panel. Additional minor repairs will be needed before the car is ready for paint, but the fiberglass remains a canvas waiting for the return of its original Monza Red brilliance.
Inside, the story is similar: mostly present, but in need of a full refresh. The steering column requires a rebuild, and the interior will need attention before the car feels like a proper cockpit again. But the bones are there, and the car’s completeness gives the next owner a strong starting point.
This Stingray isn’t pretending to be turnkey. It’s a project — one that will require time, patience, and a willingness to get hands dirty. But for enthusiasts who understand what a numbers matching 427/390 4 speed convertible represents, the potential is unmistakable.
Listed on eBay with a Buy It Now price of $32,750, the Corvette must be trailered home from Virginia Beach. For the right buyer, that trailer ride will be the beginning of a resurrection — the moment a long silent big block begins its journey back toward the sound it was born to make.
Will you be the one to undertake that project?
