A 1960 Chevrolet Corvette gasser—loud, lifted, and unapologetically old school—is drawing plenty of attention online as bidding climbs past $29,000 with nearly a week left and the reserve still unmet.
Listed on eBay by Grumpy Joe’s Garage out of Bohemia, New York, the car is equal parts nostalgia trip and unfinished project, and the comments section proves just how polarizing gassers can be.
Painted by “Psychedelic Dave’s House of What the Funk,” the Corvette wears a wild, love it or hate it finish that looks straight out of a late ’60s drag strip fever dream. Underneath, an old school Ford straight axle sets the stance, now upgraded with disc brakes. The seller says the fresh 283 fires instantly, topped with 327 double hump heads and fed by a pair of recently rebuilt 500 CFM carbs. A Muncie 4 speed sends power to a 1962 Corvette P case rear with 4.11 gears. An Anson scattershield and new clutch round out the drivetrain.
The car runs, drives, and stops—brake lights, signals, and headlights all work—but the seller admits it still needs sorting before it’s truly road ready. There’s no door glass installed (though one piece is included), and a handful of trim pieces, including grille teeth and cove spears, come with the sale.
Despite its rough and ready nature, the Corvette has no trouble firing imaginations.
“I love this era of Corvette, just not as a gasser,” one commenter wrote, noting he graduated high school in 1961 and still dreams of a stock ’61 or ’62. Another chimed in from the class of ’68, admitting he has no use for a gasser but acknowledging this one nails the look.
Others see the car’s potential differently.
“Plenty of guys would drive this on the street,” one user argued. “Finish it as a legal street car and you’ll be the center of attention at every car show, cars and coffee, and drive-in even though it will be a beast to drive.”
Not everyone agrees. Some question what the car’s next owner can realistically do with it. Restoring it to stock would be expensive, and making it track legal would require significant investment. As one commenter put it, “Half finished race cars generally don’t bring much money.”
But for many, the gasser vibe is the whole point.
One enthusiast offered a history lesson, calling gassers the very soul of early drag racing. “This is the absolute definition of cool for anyone over 60,” he wrote, recalling the era when gas was 35 cents a gallon and wild paint jobs ruled the strip. He estimated a non blown 283 gasser might have run high 11s back in the day—”a handful,” he added with admiration.
And then there are the drivers who simply want to enjoy it.
“Where I live, there are a couple of gassers driving around,” one commenter said. “If I owned this one, I’d drive the wheels off of it.”
With six days left and the reserve still unmet, it’s unclear where this psychedelic, straight axle Corvette will land. But one thing is certain: whether you love gassers, hate them, or simply don’t understand them, this wild ’60 Vette has people talking—and that’s exactly what cars like this were built to do.

Oh boy howdy, this thing just drips cool. I was an active participant of the sixties “street wars”, and this little rocker brings back some pretty fond memories. If I didn’t already possess my own “forever Corvette” I would buy this thing in a heartbeat. While I’m not terribly fond of the paint scheme, it does scream sixties and seventies. Seeing an old gasser like this still gives these old bones a thrill.
