A sprawling police pursuit that began with the theft of a bright Roswell Green C8 Corvette ended in San Jose, California on Wednesday afternoon with the suspect dead and a San Jose Police Department sergeant injured, according to authorities.

The incident unfolded around 3 p.m., when investigators say the suspect stole the Stingray from a San Jose dealership and sped south toward Hollister. Officers from Hollister Police and the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office joined the pursuit, during which two separate exchanges of gunfire occurred. Hollister officials said none of their personnel were injured.

After abandoning the Corvette, the suspect allegedly carjacked another vehicle and drove back toward San Jose, where the chase continued into the downtown area.

The pursuit came to a halt near Highway 87, close to Notre Dame Avenue and the West St. James/Julian Street corridor. Police say the suspect tried to take an SJPD patrol vehicle at the scene before fleeing on foot. Officers opened fire, and in the chaos that followed, the suspect was struck by a police vehicle.

Authorities have not confirmed the cause of death but said the man died at the scene.

The injured SJPD sergeant is expected to recover, with officials describing the injuries as non-life-threatening.

Police have not released the suspect’s name, identifying him only as an adult male.

Highway 87 and several surrounding streets remained closed for hours as investigators processed the scene.

San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan said on social media that he visited the injured officer at the hospital and expressed support for the officer’s family.
