Some breakups take decades to happen. For one Texas owner, it’s taken 45 years to work up the courage to let go of his 1959 Corvette convertible.

In an auction on Bring a Trailer, the family heirloom has hit an early high of $10,259, with the bidding to run through Tuesday, November 11th at 1:17 pm EST.

The original owner lived in Kansas, but in 1980, the current owner bought the car, relocated it to Texas, and has been behind the wheel ever since.

In the 1980s, he repainted the car white with silver coves, but apparently it’s been repainted in the decades since as the photos seem to show an all-white version now. Photos with the listing reveal a few minor chips and scratches, but the paint seems to be in good overall condition.

Under the hood is where you’ll notice the most significant changes to the car. Ten years ago he dropped in a replacement 283 V8, along with an aftermarket cam, Holley four-barrel carburetor, Edelbrock Performer intake manifold, and Hooker headers. The four-speed manual and Dana 60 rear end speak to someone who wanted to drive, not just admire.

Inside, you’ll find a reupholstered red interior that appears to be in good condition, though an aftermarket radio was installed and the passenger side tray removed (but included with the sale). The defrost ducting has been removed, the choke is disconnected, and the tachometer and temperature gauge are not functioning.

The winning bidder gets more than just the car. They’re inheriting a removable hardtop for those rare Texas cold snaps and a set of period-perfect Cragar S/S wheels. But really, they’re getting something more: the chance to be another chapter in a love story that’s lasted nearly half a century.
