[VIDEO] C8 Corvette ZR1 Roll Races McLaren 750S for the RWD Crown

For around a decade, now, McLaren Automotive has been the unchallenged bully of the fast rear-wheel-drive supercar category, a title it worked hard to attain, and one it won’t relinquish without a fight!

After creating, quite possibly, the finest consumer performance machine in history with the F1 in the 1990s, the firm best known for its 10 Formula 1 Constructor’s Championships wouldn’t try its hand at building a road-going car again until the mainstream 12C went into production in 2011.

Unfortunately, the more attainable Mac’s generic looks, and sub-Ferrari experience doomed it to lukewarm reviews followed by rock-like depreciation. Its 650S successor turned everything up several notches, but, outside of the F1’s inaccessible hybrid hyper-heir, the P1, modern McLarens didn’t really hit their stride until the 650’s high-po variant, the 675LT, bowed in 2016.

The devilish “Long Tail” combined 666 boosted ponies with a feathery 2,950-pound curb weight to become “the first truly thrilling McLaren…” per its acclaimed home-town critics and even “more exciting than ariel combat” by our top guys, kicking off an era that was somehow elevated by the arrival of the 2018 720S and its otherworldly low-10 quarter mile sprints.

Since then, no other rear-wheel-driver – and very few AWD cars – could match the 710-horse McLaren’s straight-line prowess, even the monster 755 HP C7 Corvette ZR1, leading to many allegations (and concrete proof) that the 720’s power being severely underrated by the factory.

But now, just in time to wage war with the 720’s even burlier replacement, there’s a new ZR1 in town, and it’s been peeking at McLaren’s homework. The 2019’s front-mounted supercharged cross-plane V8 has been replaced by a mid-mounted flat-plane unit with the biggest turbos ever fitted to a production car and 1.5L of displacement over what the new 750S is working with. The result is a nearly unbelievable 1,064 HP, which, strangely enough, may also be underrated!

The undisputed King of the Hill is back, and this time, it’s packing four-digit horsepower. We pitted the brand-new, 1064 HP 2025 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 (C8) against a formidable European hypercar—the track-slaying McLaren 720S (representing the latest 740 HP generation).

This is a true test of American brute force and forced induction supremacy versus lightweight carbon construction and refined dual-clutch transmission engagement. The ZR1 has an overwhelming 324 HP advantage, but the McLaren is hundreds of pounds lighter and boasts world-class active aerodynamics.

The 65 mph roll start eliminates the ZR1’s traction challenges and makes this a pure power-and-aero race. Over the short 1/3 mile distance, can the lightweight McLaren hang on to the 1064 HP missile, or is the new ZR1 simply operating in a different performance dimension?
