[VIDEO] Man Purchases a 1967 Corvette from a Friend after it Burned in a Garage Fire

Some car stories are forged in fire — literally. Meet “Burnie,” a 1967 Corvette that was pulled from the smoldering ruins of a garage fire and given a second chance at life.

Maybe they should have made its middle name “Phoenix” because this car is rising from the ashes – literally.

Scott, Burnie’s longtime owner, was mowing his lawn when a break to fill up the gas tank ignited a blaze that quickly spread into his garage and home. Inside that garage sat his beloved C2 Corvette — a car he’d restored back in 1989 with help from Larry Peotter’s father. As flames tore through the structure, the Corvette’s fate hung in the balance.

Once the fire was out, Scott made a call. Not to his insurance company — to Larry, his lifelong friend. He didn’t just want to mourn the loss. He wanted to save what was left.

Larry knew exactly who to call: Jake, a mechanic and die-hard Corvette enthusiast. Jake had always dreamed of owning a C2, though he never imagined his dream would arrive scorched and buried under debris. “It’s a car I can’t even fit in,” he joked. But he didn’t hesitate.

When Larry and Jake arrived, the garage looked ready to collapse. They had to cut their way in with a chainsaw, dodging unstable beams and melted remnants of what used to be a workspace.

What they found was heartbreaking — and hopeful. The Corvette’s body was charred, but not totally melted away like we see so often in major fires. And the cabin? Miraculously intact. The seats, gauges, and dashboard had survived, albeit coated in soot. Even the rare spindle wheels were still there, their plastic covers vaporized but the metal untouched.

Burnie had every reason to be a write-off. But then Jake turned the key, and the 327/300 horsepower V8 roared back to life.

In that moment, Burnie wasn’t just a fire-damaged relic. It was a survivor. A symbol of grit, memory, and the kind of passion that turns metal into meaning.

Of course, Burnie’s journey is far from over. A trip to a clean-up shop in New Jersey becomes the first stop as Jake wants to see exactly what he’s working with under all that soot. Obviously, the body will need to be checked out, but again we’re shocked that it didn’t disintegrate completely (and the tires even still roll), and if we had to guess a color, we’d even believe it’s Goodwood Green. The interior needs a deep clean, especially in the rear compartment covered with the remnants of the fire since the back glass is gone. The wiring? Who knows. But the heart — the engine — is strong, that much we know. And that’s enough for now.

“I’d drive it like this, without a doubt,” Jack said, grinning. “Dude, you think I’m joking? Put on some goggles. I’ve driven worse.”

With no windshield, it’s not exactly a Sunday cruiser. But that’s not the point right now. We’ll keep a watch on this car’s rise from the ashes whenever Peotter’s Auto Body & Spa posts updates on YouTube.
