[STOLEN] News Report of the Stolen Corvettes ZR1s Reveals the Stupid Reason How One of the Thieves Was Captured

Over the weekend we had another attempted heist of new Corvettes from the Corvette Assembly Plant in Bowling Green. This time, the car thieves targeted the theft of two new Corvette ZR1s valued at $230,000 each. Thankfully, both cars were recovered but not before one of them led police on a multi-state chase with speeds of 180 mph reported during the pursuit.

During those early hours following the theft, we also learned that one of the culprits had been apprehended after the stolen ZR1 he was driving was spike stripped. Bowling Green Police took 20-year-old Daedrin Cook of Detroit, Michigan into custody early Saturday morning where he was booked on a number of felony charges. It’s not known if Cook was part of the crew that attempted the thefts back in March. Like Cook, the two suspects captured after the first heist attempt at the Assembly Plant were also from Detroit.

Nashville’s NewsChannel 5 had a news report on the Corvette ZR1 heist, and it reveals both how the suspects were able to drive off the plant’s property with two new ZR1s still in white shipping wrappers, as well as how the 20-year-old suspect was captured. Both will make your head spin…

Apparently, the two thieves snuck onto the property and located the two ZR1s in the white wrappers. As the cars were ready to be shipped to dealers, the key fobs were in the cars. The news report says that Cook and his accomplice simply drove them away by following a delivery truck through the main gate. The Corvette ZR1s were then driven to a parking garage on Western Kentucky University where we assume the white shipping wrappers removed. However, the Corvettes were spotted and police responded, and it’s then that the two stolen Corvettes split up.

The White ZR1 was spotted soon after and Bowling Green Police were able to hit the car with a spike strip. Soon after, the Arctic White ZR1 was found parked and empty as Cook fled the scene. He might have gotten away with it, but nobody said these guys were smart. Supposedly, Cook flagged down a Bowling Green Police Officer to ask for help in charging his cell phone. After police asked several questions to Cook, they realized he was their suspect and he was taken into custody.

There is some more to this report including a witness from the first heist who saw three Corvettes parked in his apartment complex. He heard about the Friday night theft, and was able to capture some video of the Arctic White ZR1 surrounded by BGPD with their emergency lights activated.

As the newscaster wraps up the story, she asks the big question: Are these two attempted thefts of Corvettes from the Bowling Green Assembly Plant related? Bowling Green Police can’t prove that yet, but they are certainly looking into the possibility. The first heist reportedly had 8-9 suspects involved and only two were captured. Given the fact that Cook is also from Detroit seems to lend credence to that possibility.

  1. GM only puts a couple of gallons of gas in each new Corvette coming off the assembly line-enough to move the cars and do a simple test drive. I’ve read that ZR1s only get single digital fuel milage at full speed so it’s surprising that one of the theives was able to lead the police on a high speed chase without running out of gas. You would figure that after the last heist of Corvettes from Bowling Green that GM would improve their security measures or hire a different security company.

  2. Before reading the article as I read the tagline “ somehow” I just knew that it had something to do with a cell phone. I thought maybe the police were driving around looking for possible suspects and if and when they spotted one, they would throw a ringing cell phone out the window of the police car and when the suspect picked it up to answer it, then he would be easy to apprehend.

  3. The Perp didn’t know about wireless charging for his phone, but figured out how to get into the plant and steal a ZR1 ???
‘Thieves are smart’… said no one.
