[VIDEO] Doug DeMuro and Friends Discuss the Corvette’s Nürburgring Lap Times

Count Doug DeMuro and his Friends among the fans of the new Corvette ZR1 and ZR1X.

In a new episode of “THIS CAR POD!” on their YouTube channel, the guys make no secret of how impressed they are with the recently released record-setting times of the two most powerful C8 variants thus far.

“It’s a lot of money,” Doug admits of the $207,000 price tag on the 1,250-horsepower ZR1X, “but these cars are so legit. That’s one of the fastest cars ever around this race track.”

Indeed, the ZR1X’s time of 6:49.275 on the Nürburgring is the best ever for an American production car, eclipsing the Ford Mustang GTD by nearly three seconds, but the Pony Car costs a cool $100,000+ more.

“207 is not that much money for one of the fastest record holding (cars ever),” a Friend acknowledges.

The ZR1X’s time, of course, is nowhere near the best time ever on the German track, with that honor going to the Mercedes AMG One that ran a blistering 6:29.090. Of course, that foreign hypercar also costs more than a staggering $5 million. By the way, the AMG One record was certified by a notary “which is so German,” a Friend says. “It’s like we’re not going to believe you unless you have like a woman there with a stamp.” Pipes in another Friend: “So that’s the German way to take something incredibly exciting and make it very boring.”

While some people are wishing Chevy had used professional drivers in their record-setting performances, Doug & Friends are impressed that the ZR1X was instead driven by Drew Cattell, a vehicle dynamics engineer who now has the claim of driving the fastest lap time of any non-professional racecar driver ever at the Nürburgring – an honor they call “pretty crazy.”

They then brag about the C8 platform as a whole, calling it “wonderful.”

“This just underscores American manufacturers are making some cool stuff right now, and that is an incredible time and the engineers at GM should be very proud of that.”

Pointing to the Z06’s slower time of 7:11 around the same track, the Friends consider that “a pretty impressive time,” too.

They also note that Ford hasn’t given up taking the record back, though they do make a little fun of CEO Jim Farley’s implication that they will just take the GTD back to the Nürburgring “and think it can do notably better.”

Doug pushes back against that notion, saying, “Instead of bringing the GTD back out to try again, like you lose and it’s all right. Let’s do the World Series over again and see if we can just win this time. Why don’t you just come out with a different car?”

Regardless, the Friends say “it’s fun” to see a Ford-GM battle over who can run the best Nürburgring times. Not that long ago, who would have thought it possible?

But now GM is offering a “tremendous” value in the C8 Corvette “that people can actually go and buy,” instead of the Ford street car version of its Mustang GT3 car that costs anywhere from $327K to $500K.

In response, Doug says, “Chevy comes out with successive rockin’ Corvettes that are setting Nürburgring lap times!”
