When it comes to on-track rivalries, few are as compelling as the one between Corvette and Porsche. Recently, a Porsche GT4 RS and a C8 Corvette Z06 came together to race in the advanced class of a Chin Motorsports track date at Circuit of the Americas in Texas.
This is a very nicely done track analysis video from the driver of a Porsche GT4 RS. During his set up, he talks about how he almost purchased a Z06 but there were a couple of factors that led him not to, mostly the Z06s weight but he also admits later to not liking the Z06’s brake by wire system. Regardless of his choice to purchase the GT4 over the Z06, he says he still remains in awe of the Z06’s 5.5-liter V8 which is 40% more powerful than that of the Porsche’s 4.0-liter.
However, the Z06 also comes with a significant weight disadvantage, tipping the scales at nearly 3,800 pounds — 20% heavier than the GT4 RS which weighs in at around 3,200 pounds. This weight impacts not only acceleration but also braking performance and overall handling. Plus, the heavier weight also means an increase cost for consumables like tires, brake pads, and the like.
During the track day at COTA, the performance differences between the two cars became evident. The Z06, with its 670 horsepower, would easily pull ahead on the straights, showcasing its power advantage. However, the added weight meant that it had to brake earlier than the GT4 RS, which allowed the lighter German car to regain ground in the corners.
This was a fun and interesting video, and I enjoyed the different perspective from the Porsche owner as well. The comments on the YT page are also interesting if you want to hear Corvette and Porsche guys bench racing.
From It’s Track Time via YouTube:
This week, we’re at Circuit of the Americas (COTA) for a head-to-head between two mid-engine track monsters: the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and the Porsche GT4 RS. With the Z06 now boasting an 8,500 rpm, mid-engine 5.5L V8 pushing out 670 naturally aspirated horsepower, does the 4.0L Porsche stand a chance?
We break down the key specs, then hit the track to see how this redefined American icon stacks up. Whether you’re Team Corvette or Team Porsche, this one’s just plain fun to watch.
