The upcoming 2025 Corvette ZR1 made another splash on Saturday evening as the first RETAIL VIN 001 ZR1 was sold at Barrett-Jackson for a record $3.7 million. YouTuber Speed Phenom was there, and he catches up with Corvette Vehicle Chief Engineer Josh Holder to talk about the supercar.
“This car is at another level and its incredible. Unrelenting is a word we use pretty often,” says Josh Holder as he was standing in front of the black ZR1 Split Window Coupe shown at the auction. Talking about the ZTK package and its required carbon fiber aero package, Josh points out that the front splitter and dive planes are the same as used on the Z06, but the addition of the front flow-thru hood and its large gurney lip allowed them to add the bigger wing on the rear of the car which balances out the added downforce.
Speed Phenom suggests the only way to order the ZR1 is the Coupe version which Josh agrees with. Josh points at the visible carbon split window, saying “this piece is standard in carbon fiber, and it works to extract head out of the engine bay, so it’s a functional part like everything on a Corvette. It’s not just aesthetic…it’s functional as well and you can get it painted body color if you really want it to pop.”
Speed asks the Chief Engineer if the 233 MPH top speed was a total shocker to the team, and Josh replies, “We had a pretty good idea that it was going to happen, as especially we got near the final numbers for engine performance. Top speed is a big energy balance, so we knew how much drag the car was going to have, we knew how much power it was making. We got some pretty power analysis tools and some really, really, smart people that help us calculate that, so we were really close to our prediction.”
Speed then follows the Corvette ZR1 as it hits the auction block and then when it rolls off the block for a quick photo featuring Rick Hendrick, Craig Jackson, and a really big check made out the American Red Cross for $3.7 Million.

Rick Hendrick was given the car before the auction since he has a contract with Chevrolet.
Just like Lewis Hamilton gets any Ferrari he wants but without giving 3.7million to a charity to make it look legit. Why do you think Jackson was quick to announce who it sold to?
Definitely was a set up to increase the hype. Hendrick will end up selling hundreds of the ZR1s at $100,000 ADM

What happens to all the prototypes that are built and test driven by engineers? Why isn’t this one serial number 6 or whatever. Are all the prototypes and test mules crushed? What vin number are they given?
