After building just 300 of its newfangled fiberglass Corvettes in 1953, Chevy shot for the moon the next year, producing a whopping 3,640 units.
Unfortunately, the company badly misjudged the demand for the car, which had earned a reputation for poor build quality and other problems in its debut year, and wound up with more than 1,100 unsold 1954 models by the time production of the ’55 began.
Some 70 years later, one of those early 1954 cars – #107, to be exact – is up for sale on Craigslist out of the Allentown, Pennsylvania area with an asking price of $29,000.
The car will need a complete restoration, and it’ll likely take a brave person to take on the challenge of what could become a money pit as certain parts may be hard or even impossible to locate today. This is where 3D parts printing could really be valuable.
We don’t really know where to start to describe this Corvette, so we’ll just let the seller do the job: “Rare hand laid fiberglass matting as used on 1953 Corvettes. 1955 V8 engine with automatic transmission in car. 6 cyl 53 engine included with 3 carburetors on manifold. Make offer! Needs restoration. Partially disassembled with some parts stripped or in primer. Convertible top frame with used top. Some new or rechromed bumpers and some trim pieces will be included.”
Perhaps some of our C1 experts out there can offer an adequate assessment of this ’54. With such a low production run originally, every ’54 is worth trying to save.
Maybe this car will one day be on the road again, the way it was 70 years ago.
