Let’s hope the driver of this rental Corvette signed up for the additional insurance usually offered by the agency, especially after he went soaring about 50 feet off a cliff near the California town of Calabasas on Tuesday night.
Video from the scene shows the hazard lights still flashing on what looks to be a Torch Red C8 Corvette, now surrounded by small trees and shrubs.
After the crash, one of the occupants of the car was able to climb back up to Stunt Road, located in the mountains south of Calabasas, but the other man was trapped inside so firefighters from the Los Angeles County Fire Department had to use a rope system to reach the scene of the accident and then extricate him from the car.
Fortunately, the individual was checked out at the scene by paramedics and appeared to be uninjured. The same can’t be said for the Corvette, which suffered “a lot” of damage, according to authorities. We couldn’t find any video showing the C8 after its “rescue,” but we do understand a heavy-duty tow truck had to be called to bring it back up the cliff. Just doing that would likely cause even more damage.
Also investigating the wreck, which happened about 9:50 p.m. Tuesday, was the California Highway Patrol.
KCAL News Assignment Manager Mark Liu reports that speed may have been a factor in the crash as the driver appears to have failed to negotiate a turn on the very curvy road and plunged off the side.
Stunt Road is a four-mile connector in the Santa Monica Mountains between Mulholland Highway and Schueren/Saddle Peak Road.
According to a post on drivinggeeks.com:
“Los Angeles is a pleasure driver’s nightmare, with its extensive, boring interstate system and gridlocked traffic. Just to the west, though, the Santa Monica Mountains are a pleasure driver’s paradise – a paradise full of tight curves and switchbacks, rising elevations and impressive views. Stunt Road is a four-mile connector in the Santa Monica Mountains between Mulholland Highway and Schueren/Saddle Peak Road. While Stunt Road is a less technical drive than many of the mountain roads that surround it, it does sport some impressive curves, dips, and vistas that make the drive worthwhile. While Stunt Road is worth driving either up or down, driving down it is arguably the far superior way to go. Not only will you feel the grade on the descent, but the vistas pop going downward much more noticeably than on the drive up, the trees opening up to giving you sweeping views of the Santa Monica Mountains.”

Pro Tip:
If you play stupid games, you will win stupid prizes.
Stunt Road is no joke even if you know it well. Angeles Crest Highway is much faster, but like Stunt Road, it commands respect. Unfortunately, both roads attract the kind of careless drivers who would easily get kicked out of a track day somewhere.
Goes without saying Vette Fam- have fun, but be alert!
Poor Corvette.
