An Indiana man out for a date with his girlfriend on a recent Saturday night has quite a story to tell.

After the couple had enjoyed a trip to the casino, Ron May and his girlfriend had just gotten home in his customized Arctic White C7 Corvette coupe to watch a movie about 11 p.m. on April 20 when a red pickup pulled in behind them.

They never were able to see that flick, but now, thanks to his Ring camera, they have another movie to watch, one that they didn’t expect to be starring in, though.

Sitting on the couch in his living room, with a large blue cast on his left leg, the Terre Haute man recounted the bizarre incident to local TV news reporters.

“It’s nothing that you would expect in real life,” May told WTHR’s Will Price. “I mean, this only happens in the movies.”

The whole incident took only a matter of seconds, but that was plenty long enough to leave May with two broken bones in his leg, his girlfriend with minor scrapes and bruises, and the pickup driver in the hospital recovering from gunshot wounds, facing multiple charges.

“Didn’t know what was going on, so I put my pistol in my right front pocket, told my girl to stay in the car, and stood outside the car to see who it was,” May told WTHI reporter Ben Verbanic. “At this point, I didn’t know if he wanted some directions – I had no idea what his intentions were.”

Speaking to reporter Price, May says the driver of the truck “just looked at me and then all of a sudden he let out this battle cry yell and just floored the gas.”

The only choice he had, May recalled, “was to try to jump up over the vehicle so I kind of took a step back. I stepped on the sill of my door and kind of use that as leverage to get up higher, absorbed the hit from the truck and landed on the hood” of his Corvette.

As he was flying through the air, May says he “was definitely reaching for my pistol” and began firing about 10 shots in self-defense. “I can tell you this is the first time that I’ve ever used my pistol,” he said, “and the only reason I did that is because I had no other choice to do what I did.”

Earlier, the suspect, 35-year-old Justin Roecker, allegedly had also run over a man at a local restaurant and stolen multiple vehicles, according to court documents.

After being shot by May, Roecker fell through the window of the pickup and ran – completely naked.

“I’m glad that I did something to maybe keep him from hurting anybody else after me,” May said.

His advice for others? “Take no day for granted. You have no idea what’s coming your way. Definitely be vigilant. Mind your surroundings, always have to be ready.”

Roecker has been charged with attempted murder, criminal recklessness, resisting law enforcement, and auto theft.
