While it may not be a case of love at first sight, this rough 1962 Corvette that we spotted on eBay Motors out of the Amherst, Virginia area has apparently managed to find a new home.
A reduction in the “Buy It Now” price to $34,000 may have done the trick, since the listing was ended by the seller earlier this morning and the car is no longer available.
Some of you might be saying “better someone else than me” since this last-year C1 definitely needs a lot of work, but it also definitely has more than a few things going for it, not the least of which is that it’s one of only 1,918 units with the optional fuel-injected 327 V8 engine. We can see why so few folks ponied up the bucks for this engine since at $484.20 it added more than 10 percent of the base MSRP of $4,038 to the final sticker.
For that extra money, owners received a whopping 360 horsepower, quite a significant boost over the meager 250 horsepower of the base 327. With its four-speed manual transmission (the condition of which is not disclosed in the listing), this car should have been able to turn the quarter in 14.1 seconds and hit a top speed of 143 mph – very impressive numbers for the era.
This car’s engine appears to be mostly there, but it is missing the air clean assembly and some other minor components.
The fiberglass body, meanwhile, shows signs of neglect and minor damage, though in its favor it does have a factory hardtop and is one of only 350 ‘62s with the $139.90 power canvas top option. More concerning for some might be a particular area of the frame that in photos appears to be badly rusted and in need of help.
Also needing much help is the interior, which is pretty rough, though the gauges and seats are intact. A call to Al Knoch could have new seat covers and door panels quickly on the way to remedy that problem, however.
Our best wishes to the new owner, who has his work cut out for him. With similar restored cars going well over $100,000, however, the potential to avoid being upside-down in the end seems to be there, barring any major surprises.
