Years of bird poop and dirt remained on this 1966 Corvette Sting Ray barn find that nevertheless attracted much more interest than expected at a recent overseas auction.

The black-over-black 427/425 horsepower Corvette, which was offered at no reserve during a United Kingdom auction led in-person and online by Classic Car Auctions on Saturday, Dec. 9, was expected to bring £25,000-£30,000 (or $31,415 to $37,695).

Instead, the car wound up going for more than double that estimate, with a final winning bid of £68,625 (or $86,199.86).

The Sting Ray, built at Chevy’s St. Louis plant nearly six decades earlier, had been imported to the UK about 25 years ago, but reportedly had been left unused for about the last two decades in a barn by the anonymous owner. It was left on a trickle charger for much of that time, and the engine turned over but would not start during a recent photography session for the auction.

While the auctioneers couldn’t provide a history file for the car, they did say the VIN confirms this vintage C2 as a 1966 convertible (though the hood emblem normally used for model-year ID purposes is missing). Despite the lack of information, the body does appear to be in undamaged condition, and the interior looks to be in decent condition as well.

It’s hard to tell for sure since photos with the listing seem to indicate the task (and perhaps the pleasure) of cleaning up the years of dirt and grime was going to be left up to the winner of the auction.
